My local Radio shack dealer is having a sale on the pro 160. I can't find out wheather this model is a narrow banded scanner or not could someone please advise me if it is narrow banded. The 160 is a desk top model could you please advise me as to which handneld I need that has narrow band.

Are you referring to the step sizes of 12.5, 7.5, and 6.25Khz? I know that if this is what you are referring to, then the base/mobile Pro-163 and the handheld Pro-164 have these new steps. If you are talking about NFM, the newer dgital scanners, i.e.: 106/197 have that in the mode selection. Try being a little more specific as to what you are wanting to monitor and where

If the frequency can be received by the Pro-160, and unless it's a digital or encrypted frequency, the Pro-160 should be able to handle it. It's a 2008-vintage receiver.

VHF, UHF, 800Mhz?? The 160 has 5Khz steps in the VHF band. 6.25Khz steps in the UHF band. If your SO and FD are adding frequencies that are narrow band, you will need a scanner that has 7.5, or 6.25Khz steps. When I said a scanner that has NFM, it means the radio demodulates the narrow band signal much better than the normal FM signal. Having a scanner that does the steps makes monitoring a better listening pleasure. I am not totally familiar with the 160, but it will hear the new frequencies, but not as well as one that has the correct frequency programmed.

Just tried to plug it into my 160... as mentioned previously, the step size is not correct. The radio rounds 155.1825 up to 155.185.

As Keith has mentioned, it rounds off to 155.85. You will still be able to hear them, unless, there is another agency on 155.185 in your area. If you want to hear them more clearly, get the 163. It will let you put in the correct frequency( I tried it and it works). I understand trying to keep the expense down

There are a lot of open box Pro-163s on Ebay for $80-$100 right now, so that would still be in your price range of the $99 you are looking to pay for the Pro-160.
