Pro-163 talk groups. San Diego

Hello all,

I recently bought a used pro-163 scanner for use in my car, in San Diego. Im brand new to scanning but am excited to learn!

Im having some problems getting the scanner to listen to talk groups. As I said, I'm in San Diego and I have learned that we have a Motorola trunking system? Ive gone through the instructions dozens of times and cant seem to listen to any talk groups. I have suspicion that something is abnormal to San Diego's system and it requires me to do something else. Do I need to enter in a base freq.?

I know this post isn't a whole lot for you all to go on but as I said, Im brand new and don't know the terminology?

I'm no where near San Diego, but 2 things come to mind...

1. A lot of stuff on the system appears to be P25, which your radio won't decode.

2. This is a "splinter" system and needs to be programmed as such (if the site you want has any frequencies below 866.000 that is).

Probably not much help, but at least someone replied.
