I know that RS used to have software for the pro 82 and 2018. But i've checked the website and it doesn't apper as though they sell it anymore. I was wondering if there was anyplace online that distributed the software for the 82 and 2018.

Thanks
Drew

There are 2 I know of - Scancat Lite Plus and Pro-link (URL below). How well they support the 82 I don't know....

Prolink supports downloading to the scanner only, no uploading from the scanner to the PC. It also doesn't support the 2018. I noticed the other day that the Radio Shack software and black cable are on closeout.

I'm not sure I'd agree with the statement that it doesn't support the 2018. While it's not on the ProLink website, the Scancat Lite Plus site does say that the 2018 is the mobile version of the 82. Taking into account many GRE portables have the same protocols as their GRE mobile versions, I'd be willing to bet that, if true, it will work - to what degree is uncertain - with the 2018. Heck, it's free, and there's even a dedicated forum for the software, so you can ask before you try it out. To my mind, you don't lose much here.

Just pointing out that the author of the ProLink program does not say that his program works with the 2018. Maybe it will, maybe it won't. Got a 2018 you want to sacrifice in a good cause? Send it to me and I'll try it out! I can protect my serial port, and if the scanner goes Pfffft!, I "don't lose much here"! (heh-heh-heh!)

Hi, my name is Riley McArdle. I'm the original author of ProLink. Drew E-Mailed me and brought this thread to my attention.

I haven't tried ProLink with a PRO-2018 myself, nor have I had any reports of it working or not working. In theory though, if it is in fact a clone of the PRO-82, it should work just fine.

Please try it out and let me know what you find. I'd be interested to know what baud rate and stop bits settings work for that scanner so I can add the defaults into ProLink for it.

ProLink is open source software and there is another programmer that has added some extra features to his own version of ProLink. Here's a link to his post on the ProLink Forums with more information:

Oh, and about the cables. There's a schematic of the correct cable on the ProLink website. If you already have a cable other than the black one from RadioShack, you should pretty easily be able to take a multimeter to it and see if the connections are right. Here's a link to the cable information:

Okay, I just did some research, and cables made for any of the following scanners will not work with any of the scanners supported by ProLink:

PRO-92, PRO-93, PRO-95, PRO-96, PRO-97, PRO-99, PRO-2053, PRO-2067, PRO-2096

As for the cable for the Icom IC-R5, it look like it would also not be supported. I can't find anything definitive on that one though.

They're insanly simple cables. If you had to, you could hack one together out of an old pair of headphones and any 9-pin serial cable.

You need the black cable sold by RS (20-048). Not available online but many stores still have it in stock. The Gray cable will not work.

I am not sure how I missed this thread so far...(must be getting older than I thought).

In any case, as for the original RS Software, it is downloadable at the RS Site for free I guess. Just use this link to get to the download.

As for the cable, a few stores should still have the kit in stock, I saw a thread just the other day where someone bought it and returned it because he needed the 20-289 cable.

Just FYI, the original software from RadioShack doesn't support Windows NT 4.0, Windows 2000 or Windows XP. That's one of the reasons I originally wrote ProLink.

The program will start, but communications wont work.

Sounds like ProLink is the way to go then. :)
