NO. My computer apparently has two com ports. One in he front of the CPU along with two USB ports. What I did not realize would make a difference was that I have another com port on the back. The ports are labeled 1 and 2. In WIn 95 I changed the comport number designation between 1 and 2 and it still did not work. So the last thing I did was plug the cable into the comm port in the back and that one works. The front one works too, just not with this scanner cable. And I am not using any adapter

Serial Port = COM Port; they are the same thing. An HP Pavillion, which model?

Well, I must admit over the years I wish I had a computer that actually had the serial port on the front. Especially in the old days. I guess I have never seen it but will keep my eye out for a picture of one of these things (larger than the tiny image on the HP site).

Thanks for the info.
