PRO-96 and Win 96

Hey people

I am very new to digital scanning so please bare with me. I picked up a Pro96 from radio shack and brought it back to Canada the other day. I got home put batteries in it and the display does not work. I tried resetting it with no luck. I did call Radioshack and they are going to get me a new one but its going to be a 250 mile drive to exchange it. I also bought the programming cable and downloaded the Win96 software. The scanner would pick up the weather channels so it does work but the display is dead.

I tried to read the sacanner and got a "Timed out waiting for header" message. I did some reading on this site and as far as I know I have the right comm port selected on win 96. I am not sure if I was doing something wrong or if the scanner is the problem. I will be back on here looking for some help from you experts when I get my scanner exchanged.

I dont know how you guys have figured this digital stuff figured out. It seems complex to me. I have had conventional scanners for years but never had anything to do with digital. The city police and the local fire dept anr now digital.

Does anyone have a good site for digital freq info for Medicine Hat Alberta?

Your in the right place and the database will probably have the info needed. Win 96 is the cats meow when it comes to programing. If ya are going to have to wait to return it and it is recieving try programing it and see what happens, it will atleast give ya a chance to get to know the programs and how to use them.........Good Scannin Hoser

I tried to program it but i get the "Timed out waiting for header" error. With the display not working I have no idea if the scanner is responding or not so I will likely wait for the new radio. I was really looking forword to playing with this radio all weekend. Avgas

Go to the Win96 Help File. On the Index tab, double click the keyword connect.

Look at the third (bottom) section in the righthand pane. The usual suspects are item #1 & item #3.

The evaluation version of Win96 is not crippled in any way.

I tried to read the scanner and got a "Timed out waiting for header" message again. I followed the directions installing the driver for the cable I got at Radio Shack. I tried to reinstall the driver just to make sure the right driver was in there and now when I plug the usb cable in my computer shuts down.

I NEED HELP!!! Please

When I unplug the cable the computer will start fine.

I sure hope there is someone here that can help me.

I think I'm having the same problem as well.

I bought the USB cable with the driver software and installed it. I then ran the WIN96 program and tried to upload and received the time out notice.

Just to make sure it wasn't me or the comm port, I plugged the pro-97 in and ran WIN97 and it uploaded/downloaded just fine.

I hope this isn't a major problem...I just spent $500 for the dang thing.

At one point, I had this problem. I had to keep changing the com port setting numerous times and finally found the right one. Needless to say, this drove me up the wall until the solution was found. The com port setting is different on the laptop and desktop. Hope this may help you.

Well I returned it...come to find out it had been returned twice for diff reasons. I was sent to another store and they gave me one that hadn't even been opened.

Programming works fine now.
