Here's what seems to be the culprit on the false frequencies:

Good call Mikey. I'll check this out. We've got a few issues in this area - like Identifier updates - to get squared away. I think I figured out a Motorola proprietary extension to P25 (it's a continuation message).

Also, P25 systems use Decimal talkgroup IDs, so ...

The packet decoder in the dump tool will become the basis for P25 support in T4Win. When that happens, you'll be able to select the style of output - hex, decimal, or whatever. It's convenient for me to see the packet output in hex as I can look for packets with similar hex values. From the content I can infer the meaning.

If you want the dump files, I have them from 6 towers thus far on the MPSCS. Two of them were weak signals so there's a lot of stack overflows on those, but the others are pretty clean. I only ran them for about a minute each, but it gave some pretty good information to have (specifically the alternate control channel information).

ok, I would really like to see this work on my pro-96 but I cannot get it to work......
Can someone help?

I am using the Radio Shack programming cable with a USB-to-Serial Port Cable(26-183) attached to it. I have to use it because my Dell Laptop does not have serial ports, it only has USB ports.

I turn the scanner on and tune to a 9600cc and then prg, fun, prg prg and then hook the cable up and runn the dump program and it keeps telling me that it cannot find the com port.

Help??

BTW......I just ran my WIN96 software, and it works just fine....so I double checked the com port and I am using COM Port 4 but this program is not seeing it.....

Still looking for some help! :)

Did you try to manually tell it to use COM4?

You can do that by typing this on the command line:

pro96dmp COM4

I'm in the same boat still... Win96 works fine for COM1, and when I start pro96dmp COM1 -verbose it tells me that the radio is not responding even though the pgm-func-pgm-pgm puts it into the mode.

What system are you monitoring? Does the radio display the 5 digit WACN and 3 digit SYSID before you press "PRG FUNC PRG PRG" ?

This is all I get:

pro96dmp (C) Copyright 2004 <rfmobile@swbell.net>
Version 2004.07.04
usage ...
pro96dmp port [ -verbose ]
where port is one of COM1, COM2, COM3, or COM4

C:\work\pro96dmp\main.cpp(41): Error, Failed to open comm port (press RETURN to exit).

Rob,

Turn the radio on, manually select a data channel. Then hit PGM TRUNK PGM TRUNK PGM once the scenner goes into v-scanner mode plug in your cable. Then run the program followed by a space then by com1.

This is how it works on mine and MPSCS dumps it's information fine.

That's what I do (except for your keycode, I use the PGM-FUNC-PGM-PGM) and then just get "Warning, warning: radio not responding" Maybe it's my cable?

First off, thanks to rfmobile (Rick) for his efforts with the PRo96 dump program.

I've been reading and re-reading this thread trying to figure out why I can't get mine to work.

I have a good 9600 baud P-25 data channel, with good SYS id and 99% accuracy of decoding on the radio. I have tried several cables, all of which work fine with Win96, and have tried several computers and different COM ports on each. I am using real 9-pin COM ports and not USB adaptors.

In all tests it appears that the computer is talking to the radio, but in all but one setup the radio is not responding. In the one instance that the radio actually shows ** IN USE ** on the display, the screen dump still shows a lot of warnings that the radio is not responding, but occasionally shows a stack overflow with a lot of zeros. Also in this one set up, the data zips by so fast on the screen that you can't read anything, but on the other test, the data scrolls by at a nice, easy to read pace.

Is there a possibilty of a COM port speed or setup issue? I know that the PRO-96 communications format wants 19200, N, 8. Does pro96dmp.exe set the computer COM port to the correct format & speed?

I'll keep trying things here! :?

Be sure to use the PGM-FNC-PGM-PGM key sequence on the radio before you run the program. Without that, you'll get what you describe.

Thanks, Mike.

I have been doing the PGM-FCN-PGM-PGM every time with no success. I do get the screen that shows:

V Scanner
PC/IF Port
Remote Acces
CLR to Exit

But, I never get the Remote Acces line to show ** IN USE **, and I never see the radio reply on the COM port.

No clue then. I know there was some talk about the RS/GRE cable having problems with some laptops, could that be the issue (probably not since you mention you've tried it on multiple computers).

I know it works here very well. If you don't mind saying, which system are you trying to decode information from?

Thanks for the program. It works great for me using the RS cable. I am monitoring the MPSCS system here in Manistee. I have found that if you press the Pause button on the keyboard the dump will stop but nt cause the program to exit. I can then just press the space bar to resume.

That's a good sign. What does the radio display just before you do the PGM-FUNC-PGM-PGM key sequence?

Here's what mine looks like ...

Code:
M203 .-D.+MO
   866.28750
Austin TRS
96:BEE09 99%

Notice that the radio is parked on the control channel in MAN mode, not in SCAN mode. You may also want to turn off all other banks while you're doing this.

After pressing PGM-FUNC-PGM-PGM I see (like you above) ...

Code:
V Scanner
PC/IF Port
Remote Acces
CLR to EXIT

After the program is running, the third line should alternate between "Remote Access" and "*** IN USE ***" at a fast rate. If you are seeing data at all on the computer's screen then the radio and program are definitiely talking. Once there the only issues should be (a) placing the radio on an active control channel and (b) placing the radio in the correct mode via the key sequence.

I am using the RS cable and doing exactly the instructions posted above and it seems to work flawlessly.

Ok, I captured some data from the Ludington, Bucks Corners, and Freesoil towers last weekend. Not a lot, but some. I grew up in Ludington, and spend some time there with family during the summer. I wasn't close enough to get the Onekema or Pleasanton sites.

I've got data from 8-10 towers with no problems with the same setup you have.

ChrisP: That's exactly what is happening to me. Regardless of how many times people restate the quite simple instructions, it's not going anywhere past that stage.

That's a good sign. What does the radio display just before you do the PGM-FUNC-PGM-PGM key sequence?

>>>

Here's what my radio shows prior to the PGM-FCN-PGM-PGM operation:

M701 ..D.+MO
167.46500
Bank 7 Ch 01
96:SYS715 99%

And the channel is active with control channel data (I couldn't type a little lightning bold next to the channel number above!).

<<<

After the program is running, the third line should alternate between "Remote Access" and "*** IN USE ***" at a fast rate. If you are seeing data at all on the computer's screen then the radio and program are definitiely talking. Once there the only issues should be (a) placing the radio on an active control channel and (b) placing the radio in the correct mode via the key sequence.

And that's what has be baffled. I get the radio set up, I get the program started but never see the *** IN USE *** come on. I have tried several cables and three computers with basically the same results. The only trial that had any promise was using my Toshiba laptop and the GFE cable on COM 1, the *** IN USE *** did flash on the radio, but the program was still showing this:

C:\work\pro96dmp\PRO96.CPP(173): Warning, Warning: radio not responding.
C:\work\pro96dmp\PRO96.CPP(136): Worker transitions from eAck to eEnq (0 ms).

C:\work\pro96dmp\PRO96.CPP(173): Warning, Warning: radio not responding.

It seems to be that the problem is that the radio is not sending data back to the computer for some reason...

Thanks much, Rick for taking time to help me with this...
