I just got the new handheld and I can't get a clear sound out of it. It's all broke up 70% of the time so I took it back and got a base radio and the samething. Today I changed the ant and the something. Its a little better but now I don't know what to do. I live close to a tower in Toledo. Is there a amp I can buy or should I just return the base and forget it?

You have the Pro 96, What antenna are you using?? How are you programing the scanner? What is it that you want to monitor? We will start there and see if we can figure something out, also what is the base you are refering to? Hoser

Ok I now have a 2096 base and a center loaded antenna and the store did all updates and programing. The antenna is set for 800m. I want to get Toledo Maumee and Waterville. They come in but most of the time its not clear at all. I can get Oregon clear but its way far away from my house. Thank You
I live in Ohio

Gosh, you should be getting great coverage on Lucas county TRS, MARCS and even MI MPSCS Monroe CO tower.
Code:
852.2125	Lucas Co
853.1625	Lucas Co
855.4625	Lucas Co
855.4875	Lucas Co
866.8875	MARCS
867.3125	MARCS
868.2625	MARCS
868.5125	MARCS
868.4000	MPSCS
868.9000	MPSCS
Program the above freqs in Motorola mode into three separate banks (one bank for each system). Set each bank to Motorola mode also (PGM TRUNK up to MOT. Then press SCAN and insure a + is under each of the three banks you have the freqs in. If any are a - , press FUNC plus 5 to insure a + is indicated. (this is OPEN Mode scanning)

Below my signature is a link to a programming shortcut for the 96 and 2096.

Either scanner should do well.

Yes I know I can hear MARCS online and he sounds great. I dont understand I live like ten miles from him. I will try your post. Why cant I put them all in one bank?

Reasons:
1. they are three distinct systems.
2. you can toggle a system off/on simply by pressing its associated bank number.
3. each bank is limited to 150 talkgroups.
You can however, program multi sites for the MARCS system or MPSPS system.

The three groups in my previous is a single site for each of them and the only site for the Lucas County system. They are the controls for each.

fmon - a little deeper please ?

fmon - following this thread and have a couple more questions...and u seem to know !

I'm moving up to a 2096 from several old analog ones (pro 94,95,97) and confused.
Old system is a Motorola Type II Smartnet.
New system is a Project 25 standard.

So I only have to code in the control channels, not the talk ids?
Why would I enter talk ids, to show as alpha tags ?
I'm also trying to use win96 and does not have a box for trunking and scanlite plus and it does not have a motorola option. Do I have to pgm by hand ? Suggestions?
If so, what option to use in wiki cheet sheet ? don't see Project 25.
Can I mix the 2 systems if I put them in different banks? (seems to be working)
Last one  have you ever used pro96 com to watch it on the PC ?
thanks for humoring me.....

Hey, I had the same problem around here, I could hear my local city but not further out, I ended up having to get me a Base Scanner Antenna and mount it outside about 20 feet above the roof on a pole/tower to get what I wanted. I still don't get what I wanted but it's a big improvement compared to what I was getting, Might have to try that option. Just a suggestion...

Yes but ID's with alpha tags make for much better scanning. They will indicate on line 4 during coms.

Yes, also for scanning in Closed Mode.

Trash scancat and use Win96. You are a Premium Subscriber so you can use Web Import in the files menu. This will import controls and selected talkgroups to the bank you chose ready to load to scanner.

Don't use two systems in the same bank but you can program multi site Motorola or P25 systems into the same bank.

Many times for P25 systems.

fmon, oops one followup

on pro96com - i've tried to get it working on pro-2096, no data... do you have it working on the desktop model or only on the pro-96 ? If i know it will work on the 2096 i'll keep trying to figure it out.

works the same on both. (I have both)

Set the radio to talk to the program by pushing Manual to got to the channel of interest (has to be a digital control channel).
Then PGM then Funct then PGM then PGM again to put the radio in the correct state.

Working on both...fact is, can run both on two different incidences, using different cables of course.

Insure you know the Comport for the cable...either the GRE/RS USB or 20-289 Serial will work.
Set Decode Configuration under Edit menu in software.
With Scanner manually on the P25 CC and cable plugged in,
PROG
FUNC
PROG
PROG
Click Read Data From Radio button...Light will go out on the scanner.

zsowle50: Lucas County System

zsowle50, did you get your Lucas County / Toledo digital system to work any better? I am having a hell of a time - 12 or 13 towers and using a directional antenna pointed at one, and it STILL breaks up. Some people living under a tower can get it to work, but not the rest of us.
An email to Radio Shack's HQ gave me only a generic answer when I asked them about a firmware update - which it obviously needs. Anybody know how to get a 'real' person at RS to care about this an to fix it?

No Im having no luck and it bums me out. Its funny I want to a friends house tonight with it and it sounded great he is 5 miles east of me. He said he would be happy to listen to it for me. The people at RS are telling me the tower might me bad near my house and there are alot of problems with the system right now. All I know is I payed big money to have it work and it stinks I cant hear much of anything.

You may be too close to the local tower, try adding attenuation to the mix and see if that clears up the local tower. BTW, other than the audio section and the case the Pro-96 and Pro-2096 are identical radios.

some expansion of the topic

Lou is on the right path and there are several ways to pursue it.

The possible problem is that you have a single tower that is so close to you that the signal from that tower is overloading the radio.

There are two different ways this could present itself. It could be that the channel for that tower (and only that tower) is received badly from overload. In that case setting attenuation for that channel alone might fix the problem. (the ATT key) You could hear such a tower with the antenna completely disconnected from the radio.

The other case is that the signal from that tower is causing trouble for all the other channels in that band as well. (also known as 'desensing' the receiver)
In that case perhaps global attenuation will give you back *some* of the other channels as well as the closest one. (but the channel has to be heard over the attenuation)

There can be situations where a transmitter close by that's not even of interest to you can give you these problems. Reportedly paging transmitters can do this. There are special filters made that can be added to notch-out these frequencies (151 to 152 Mhz - yes close to VHF public service freqs....).

The salesfolk at Radio Shack are there to sell stuff. Not understand it :)
Now you know more than they do.
It'll take a little investigative work on your part.

Have fun!

working ! thanks fmon, nwou

Back home again, tried all the suggestions, working great! Now that I have it programmed, I see how easy it really is. For anyone new reading this thread, read the suggestions above, get win96, join RR, use web import database, and you will be working in no time.

I am confused at what you are talking about above. I have a pro96 and Win96 and a cable. Are you talking about listening and watching your pro96 scanner on your computer screen, if so how do I do that? Thank you very much for your help!!
