Both will work fine. Its up to personel preference to choose.
Both can be ordered online quite easily,
The 296 can be purchased in Toronto or Durham at stores
I heard the 96 has better audio and I hear their battery configuration is better than the 296.

I have the 96. Have programmed 296 for local TV-station in addition to their 796's. The 296 is a little dorky. 96 is easy to operate. Also can be set up in trunking as test mode to find new ID's. PGM one bank with controller for MOT system. PGM all talk groups. Lockout all talk groups except for one or two that are not too busy. Run in OPEN mode [+] Anything new that comes on the air can be found in a second. Good Luck

The Pro -96 may be better for this reason :

Enter Control Channels only on VHF trunked systems

This detail will be a timesaver as the radio will figure out the remaining
freq's for each site. The BC296D requires you to program all freq's per site.

Another point is the "96" uses AA cells, (everybody has those handy), the
296 uses a battery pack.

Hmm....which would you choose ?

Don't know if this affects Canada, but if rebanding is in the future, both radios will become paper weights.

I'm pretty sure the BC296D can work from control frequencies only as well, at least if you beleive their manual, I haven't tried it myself.
I've heard that the main advantage of the Pro-96 is the capacity to store and recall more trunk systems, since with the 296 you're restricted to one per bank and there's 10 banks so you run out real fast but on the Pro 96 there folders in which you can store more than one set of banks?

Most newer Uniden and RS models will not become paper weights with the rebranding, they will just require a firmware upgrade which will be made available when they know exactly what the final plan will be. Please read these threads before you post useless information to this thread.
