I'm trying to download Win96 to my Windows-backed computer. I go to the Win96 homepage, click on 'Download Win96 here' link, have tried to both open and save the file, it downloads sucessfully but then a WinZip window opens up and requires me to register. But I don't want to download WinZip, which is a file compression software, I want to download Win96 for a Radioshack Pro-96 scanner.

I think it may be a configuration issue on starrsoft.com's (Win96 provider) end because I've attempted to download Win96 on other PCs and that link on the homepage has given the same result.

Just some background that may or may not be relevant, I purchased the Win96 software for $30 about a year ago and had it stored on my other laptop which got stolen back in March. I'd now like to download Win96 for the first time on my new laptop. When I initially downloaded the software about a year ago to my other laptop, I never experienced this type of issue. I still have my 16-character key ID that is required after the trial period in order to utilize Win96.

Any input or advice would be greatly appreciated!!!

Somehow your computer has associated the .zip files with WinZip (did you try it sometime in the past?) so your computer (not the web site) thinks it needs to use that application to open those files. You may try to uninstall WinZip so the association to .zip will be broken and should return to the default. If not, try what's in the next paragraph as a possible resolution.

Right click a .zip file and select Properties (generally the last item in the list). The second section of the General tab on the Properties screen will have something like highlighted in the attachment (although you'll probably have WinZip in the "Opens with:" line. Hit the Change button and select Windows Explorer as shown in my example. While it isn't the best .zip manager, it generally does the job without adding anything to your computer.
