I bought the radio shack usb cable to program my Pro-2055, and I tried to follow the instructions as carefully as I could... The computer does not do what the instructions says it does, the crappy printout that came with the CD as an instruction sheet contradicts the pdf file on the CD entitled User's Guide. Now it doesnt work... Can someone help me or have I botched it completely? I am ready to never do business with radio shack again, and do some serious damage to this *%^*%* CD !!!!!!!!!

According to the crappy instructions, word for word:

1. Put the driver CD into your computer [i did that]

2. Plug the USB cable into any available USB port [did that too]

3. Windows will prompt you with a "new hardware found," [which it did], and when the wizard asks for a driver [it did NOT] use the "browse for driver" button [this was NOT available] and point to the folder on the cd marked "Drivers" [the folder is entitled Driver, and what the hell does "point to it" mean?]

4. Double click on the "Driver folder" [i did and it just opens the folder, showing all the files, nothing else happens]

5. Then click "next" and that screen should display the driver's ".inf" file [there is NO 'next' button at all, and I found no inf file; i have absolutely no idea what this is talking about]

6. Accept that file and it will install the device driver for usb access - and - install a serial port driver for the serial/comm port assignments. You may be asked to do this twice [why the hell would it ask me to do it twice???], just be sure to point to the folder on the cd titled Drivers. Normally the Serial Port number will be the Next Highest Port number above the ones already in use on your computer.

Sorry if I'm an idiot, but it sounds like these instructions are from Mars....

I had this issue with the USB cable and the Pro 2096. Try uninstalling the CD that came with your USB cable again. Run the CD, plug in the cable and then run "Device Manager" under the help & support in windows. You should see somewhere your USB ports and what they may be assigned to. I have several ports available, but only 1 of them was able to communicate with the scanner. I think I had to use port 5 or 6, but not sure. I hope this helps. I felt the same way you did until I get it figured out. Now that I do, it works great. Hope this helps and good luck.

I think everyone who has used that cable has had some sort of problem, I know I did. But with the help of people here at RR I got it working quickly. The whole driver thing is kind of misleading. Usually that is not the problem.......

What you need to do is
CONNECT THE CABLE
Go to Control Panel; System; Hardware; Device Manager; Ports ...
and check to see what COM port has been assigned to the cable. Put that value into the software you are using.

Good luck.

OK I got it to work!!!

Anyone else having this problem should do this:
Ignore whatever the instructions say
Let Windows install it automatically instead of manually picking the driver
Go into device manager to see the port
Go into win97's configuration tab and selecting that port

It took a few tries for the data to be sent, but IT WORKS!!!

THANK YOU ALL for all your help; I REALLY appreciate you guys!!!

Pro2096

I went through all that when setting it up to try to program my Pro2096. Had the same issues!!!

I finally figured out that I had to set it to run on the correct COM port !!!!
