Ah now I see why you can hear them. That is the frequency for Louisville DEP/APP which extends a good amount out around the airport.

And quite possibly the transmitter location is closer to him than he thinks since this is the APP/DEP freq EAST of Louisville.

When you stated you heard GROUND traffic at 80 miles away, I thought you were talking aircraft. Try listening to 118.9 or 121.8, 121.7 or 126.1 for real ground traffic from KLOU or KSDF.

Well I just finished up a homebrew OCFD antenna and I'm picking up more on the local airport, and less on the one farther away.

The air side is coming through good, but the ground side isn't breaking squelch. If I turn it down all the way I can faintly hear the ground side.

I guess it's not meant to be. :(

Thanks for all the help guys.

Been there done that. I know what that feels like. One last resort... What kind of coax do you have connected from the antenna to your scanner?

Sadly that is not an option as I live in an apartment.

Not so fast. Got a closet? I once kept a scantenna in a closet for quite a while and ran my radios from it. It worked surprisingly well. It beat the tar out of the stock whip antennas. You could do the same with a discone. Having a short run of cable helps too. It's also nice not to have to worry about lighting storms whacking your antenna system. One drawback is interference from various RF producing devices in the home. I put mine as far from my radio room as possible and on an outside wall. Worked great.

6ft of RG-59.

I've seen a drastic improvment with the homebrew antenna I put together, I have one element 1/2 wave for the air band, so it's picking up pretty nicely now.
