I really don't understand the relationship between a frequency such as 898.01000 and the decimal (or hex) number of 04029.

When programming the PRO-96, can one program the 04029 number and have automatic access to any frequency using that group number (if that is what it is called)? Or must one program only a frequency and the 04029 automatically comes with it?

This manual, for novice scanners at least, is exceptionally poorly written and I speak as a long time college and industry teacher and tech writer. The tech writer who wrote this should be replace. (Sorry for the outburst.)

The freqs dont have anything to do with talkgroup codes. On a Motorola system you enter the controller freq with all modes in the program set to MOT then the ID's will show on the display. You select the ones you want to monitor and enter them in the correct place. Post more info on location and system you want to monitor. Someone in your area should be able to help. Good Luck, Larry

OK, you helped when you used the word 'frequency' before the term 'IDs'. So the ID's then will only identify the source after the frequencies are porgammed in--not DETERMINE the target of the radio source.

Thanks.

Thanks.

Also would highly recommend using the win96 and the programming cable for programming the Pro-96 sure makes things much easier. Depending on what agencies you wish to monitor I may already have files for that area.

You're confusing two separate issues here. The frequency doesn't have anything to do with the talkgroups (TG's). Frequencies are simply the channels through which information (and audio) is communicated. TG's are specific control groups located within a radio system to allow persons who listen to that TG to follow it regardless of the frequency. To put it another way, a given radio system may have, say, 10 frequencies. One of these will be something called a control channel. The control channel, which all the radios in the system monitor, conveys information about which TG's are active at any given point in time. The control channel tells the individual radios which frequency to tune in order to hear the traffic assigned to that TG. For example, if I'm a police officer assigned to section 1, my radio will listen to the control channel and only provide audio on that particular TG. The control channel contains information that allows the radio to figure out which frequency it should be listening to (which can be any of the 10 in the system), in order to "hear" that TG. Other traffic is ignored. This allows many different groups to share a common radio system since they only hear "their" group. Of course, it isn't really that simple since radios can be programmed to "hear" multiple TG's, but I hope you get the idea.

I just want to back-up Jimmnn's suggestion that you get Win96. It really makes programming the Pro-96 much easier. I have several files for the Denver area.

I did indeed buy the program and am now in the process of learning it.

Great!

Now *if* you want a fairly, and I emphasize *fairly* as it is probably never going to be `completely' no matter how hard one can try {WAN GRIN!}, comprehensive collection of .P96 files for the Colo DTRS along with some other interesting Colo radio files you can email me and I can `ship' it off your way. It will definitely help you get going a lot quicker than fumbling around trying to get things from here, there, and everywhere whilst learning the radio on top of everything. {GRIN!}
