With the 24.0 version of ProScan came the addition of the Profile Editor for the 436/536 and 100/200 series Uniden scanners.

This was a great improvement, as Sentinel is basically no longer required, except for Firmware and master Database updates.

Prior to this release, I had done some tweaking to my screen on my SDS200. Using Sentinel I added color to the various fields, to my liking. But with each change, I had to do a File> Save. Then swap over to Proscan, re-read the Sentinel profile.cfg file, apply, and then review the changes. Without Proscan, you would have to write the file with Sentinel, before you could see the changes, which took a lot of time.

After getting my screen to my liking, I then added colored backgrounds, Blue for Law, Red for Fire, and light Purple for EMS. Of course some of the colors I had chosen, would not show up when a department would transmit, because of the added background color. This entailed going back to the editor in Sentinel and finding a color that showed up readable on the scanner screen. A lot of trial and error, to get a color that would show up readable on all three of the backgrounds, and a whole lot of saving the file in Sentinel, and then swapping to ProScan to see how they looked.

Once I got it to my satisfaction, I stopped there.

Now comes along version 24.0 and Bob Aune, the author of ProScan, adds in a Profile Editor to the program! Wow, no more swapping back and forth with Sentinel.

Of course I had to try it out. And with the anniversary of our great Nation, I wanted a RED, WHITE, and BLUE theme to my screens. So I began to work on setting that up. Getting the basic background colors was easy, divided the screen into three sections, top section Red, middle section white, and bottom section Blue.

Then began the task of choosing colors that were readable on the scan screen, but also readable on the receive screen at the same time. This took the better part of an afternoon and evening to accomplish. but being able to make a change, write the file, then quickly reload the profile.cfg in ProScan and see the results, made the whole process a lot easier and quicker.

But also in the mean time, I would occasionally want to see what the colors actually looked like on the scanner screen since there is a difference on the shading of colors between the scanner and computer screens.

But Bob had made this simpler by adding FTP services inside Profile Editor, for both Read and Write. No longer had to hook up the usb cable, write, and then unhook the usb. Of course you have to have the ethernet connected on the scanner, but mine stays that way at all times. I could quickly see how the screens looked on both scanner and computer.

A big round of applause for Bob for this improvement, and a bigger round for all the help he is to everyone on RR and other platforms.

Here are some screen shots of the final product for my 4th of July theme, God Bless America, God Bless Our Troops, and God Bless Our First Responders!

Don't be afraid to go in and modify your screen and make it personal to you.

Nothing more boring than a factory screen.

Another feature in Profile Editor (also in Sentinel) that I always tell someone to do with their scanner is:

Go Profile Editor, click on Display Options, and enter their information on the initial screen, in case the scanner is lost or stolen.

Still very useful for me, as my SDS100 is one of my main logging scanners. Just having a different color flash when certain things pop will be great.

That's exactly what I need. A nice flash of a different color when one of the 'special' channels gets active. I suspect this will become a very popular feature.

It's been in ProScan for a while now, a lot of folks just don't know about it, they just program the scanner, and go with it, never explore the other settings, or features in ProScan. Maybe Bob can tell us what release it came out in.

I had no idea. I found the old threads about customizing in Sentinel when I got my SDS scanners and made them colorful and hi-viz.

Whenever or however this feature got in there, I'm glad to know about it. It's a good way to move a bit of brain power from aural to visual. I miss some things on the scanner when I'm searching HF. Nice to have an attention grabber to help that.

ETA: Thanks for such a great product, Bob. Purchasing software tends to make me grumpy. Purchasing ProScan put a smile on my face.
