To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

I purchased the Motorola RSS software and a RIB to program several CP200 portables. I have loaded the software on an old computer with a COM 1 port and running Windows 95. I have used this computer to program M-1225 mobiles and GR 1225 repeaters that use Motorola software from the same era. I'm running the software in DOS mode but the program can't find the Com Port. I have tried both COM 1 and COM 2. I get a BUSS error each time I try to connect to read the portable.

Can anyone give me some advice of how to get this program to work on my computer?

Thank You

Sounds like your PC setup is too old. Try running on a newer PC in Windows, not DOS.

The software is from 1990 (Latest Version) and requires COM1 or COM 2 ports. I tried using Vista, since the software requires a 32 bit system, and a USB to COM adapter cord set to both COM 1 & 2 with the same results.

A "DOS Box" under windows blocks direct program control of the UART chip, which much of the DOS-based RSS requires. Run your RSS under native DOS.

I tried running the RSS software strictly on DOS, Windows 95 wasn't loaded, and I came up with the same results. I have tried two different Motorola RSS disks and they both come back with the same error messages. I'm running RSS software from 1990 for the M1225 and GR 1225 on the same computer without a problem.

The CPS you should be using is RVN4191. I don't think it was ever made for DOS as the radios were introduced in 2002. I can get the software to run fine on 64 bit Windows 7. And I even got it to run on 8. You are over doing this all you need is a ribless usb cable and Windows XP or higher and you are set.

Can you go to "device manager" and see your com ports?
If so, double click on com port to see which one is available.

Name of the product and version, please.

As pointed out, if you are attempting to program CP200's, the correct product is HVN4191 and it is called Commercial Series CPS, and it is a CPS, not RSS. It is a windows exclusive program. It will run fine on Win 98 and newer, and probably on 95 as well. It has to be installed while running windows.

Here's my standard info:

Search tags: The Commercial Series included:

Portables: CP150 CP200 CP200XLS PR400
Mobiles CM200 CM300 PM400

It may be helpful to search using wildcards.
If someone asks a question about one model,
the answer usually pertains to most, if not all.

They are all programmed with RVN4191 CPS.
The last version of the CPS released before the
product line was discontinued is R05.18.

If you need a blank codeplug, there is a folder
full of them, one for each possible model
number already on your hard drive. The folder is
in Program Files where your CPS is installed.
It is labelled SAMPLES.

I also have it running just fine on an XP Pro desktop in the shop and on Win 10 on my laptop. I don't think it liked Vista very much, but then nothing did.

The shop computer has real serial ports on it, and I use a serial to CP200 ribless cable which works perfectly. It also has USB ports, and my USB cable works just as well on that machine although I do have to change the com port in the CPS if I do that which is to be expected.

Thank you for the information on the HVN 4149 software. I have been trying to use the software intended to program P200 portables. I will locate a copy of HVN 4149 and start over!

Thank you again

Chuck
