Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

Can anyone recommend a reliable USB to Serial cable for programming an XG-75M? I understand that a serial 9-pin to serial 9-pin cable is preferred but neither of the two computers I use for programming has a 9-pin serial port. I was looking at this one because from what I gather the FTDI chipset is a must if going this route:

Is there a particular cable that is reliable and stable?

For posterity...

I was able to find a good answer in that the SeaLevel 2105R seems almost universally recommended, with quite a few people adding that any DB9 to USB cable will work well provided it has the FTDI chipset. Further still, some say that any off-the-shelf USB to DB9 cable you get at Best Buy will work also.

I'm going to try to keep costs down by attempting the reputable cable with FTDI chipset posted above. I'll report back with results.

With a PC lacking a DB9 serial port, you are much stuck using a USB to RS232 adapter cable. As recommended, a cable with genuine FTDI chipset there should be no problems. ($10 and up)
The DB9 F to DB9 M cable is nothing more than an extention cable and anything generic will work. ($10)
This setup will actually work with any radio that uses a DB9 programming port provided the software supports USB.
Radio specific programming cables with DB9 F can be used and works. (software dependant)
XG-75 are quite easy to program, I use RPM C-14 for everything Harris. the above configuration has always worked.
