There's nothing wrong with it. Many of us are hams and would agree. Amateur radio is not the only way to learn, experience or use radio.
I had a lot of mentors in my early years, and the ones that taught me the most were -not- hams. Hams do not have the market cornered on radio knowledge, in fact, you'll find GMRS users, CB users, shortwave listeners and scanner listeners that know more than your average ham. Remember, getting an amateur radio license only involves passing a multiple choice test with a passing score. It's not rocket surgery.
