To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

I am trying to program a TK-7160H. I have the newest software and a Staples USB to serial adapter. The software will not even recognize my com port. Yes all drivers are set up. I use the adapter to program other radios, Moto and Icom. Is it a kenwood issue that wont recognize the USB to serial? Any help would be great.

Also some time while using a ribless usb cable when I read the radio it says com port failure. I shut the radio off and turn it back on and sometimes it reads it and sometimes it doesn't and I need to hit retry. It usually works after a few times. Any know of issues like this? Again its only a kenwood issue.

I am using Windows 7 XP mode if it matters.

Thanks,
Josh

It could be windows 7. I use a usb adapter on my Vista laptop and although it works i have to manually set the com port every time. when you open up the com port tab does the software tell you what ports are available? if so i think your ok just keep selecting a different one till you hit pay dirt. If not that check your cable plug connections. I never have issues with XP only vista, hope this helps.

I'm using windows 7 with the Kenwood KPG USB cables without any issues.

I'd try a different USB adapter if you have one.

Similar problem here and here is how I fixed it for my radios.

Try this, with your USB-serial adapter connected open up CONTROL PANEL

select 'Administrative tools', then click on 'Computer management' then click on 'DEVICE MANAGER'

scroll down and look for 'PORTS' and expand PORTS and then click on 'USB to serial port ' and open up the 'PORT SETTINGS' then click the 'ADVANCED TAB'

In ADVANCED port settings at the top you will see USB transfer sizes, but first make sure you have the correct com port open that represents your USB adapter and then lower your RECEIVE and TRANSMIT (BYTES) to something around 3584 and click OK OK and you should be out of the setup.

Try this and see if the radio reads/writes.

Friggin Microsoft, uh I mean Microcrap makes it so hard to get into the USB-serial port settings, they should be hung out and shot for their cryptic crappy OS and all the crap steps required to open one stupid menu list.

Hi Mike -

Same issue trying to program a TK-250. The computer (a Windows 7 machine - I am running the KPG-23D software in DOS Box) recognizes the USB to serial adapter and it's set to COM 2 (so is the programming software). When you choose "Read from Radio" in the Kenwood software, it shows a communication error. It reads "Error!! Check Connection. Retry or Cancel ?"

I have tried this on machines running both Windows 7 and Windows XP, with and without a USB to serial adapter (I have a couple of older XP computers which have serial ports for the Kenwood programming cable).

This is driving me crazy. Has anyone had any luck contacting Kenwood with this sort of programming question?

Now with this radio it DOES need to be put into program mode before a read is attempted.
Can't remember what the button presses are off the top of my head. Maybe I can find a service manual.
Help, anybody else?

What are you programming, Ramal?

For the TK-250/350:
With the radio off, hold the lowest button on the side (below the PTT button) and the LO button (closest to the volume knob) and turn the radio on while still pressing the buttons. Wait a couple of seconds, radio should show -- PC -- on the screen.

The OP is talking about the TK 7160. There is no button push's that need to put the radio into program mode.

Using KPG 99D software and the KPG 46 cable, start program, turn radio on, then 'read' the radio, make changes, save file, then reprogram radio.

10 minute max and all is well.

Tryed to attach service manual but can not.

software for TK-7160H

The user manual calls for KPG-99A software and the KGP-46 serial cable to program this radio.
I have been searching several sites without success.
Any suggestion?
Thanks,
Bill
