I have recently purchased a Kenwood TK-7160HK second hand. When I went to program it I ran into a read and a write authorization password. I asked the guy I bought it from if he knew the password and he did not. He's also not a radio guy so I get it. Is there anyway to remove the password lock? I have used a 8160K before and used the KPG99D programming software and from what I have read online the software works for the 7160HK too. Any help is much appreciated.

To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:
Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.
For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

KPG-99 is the correct software for the TK-x160 mobile radios.
If you tried writing a new file and it wanted a password, then you only have three options:
-Send it in for service. If United Radio still services those, they can remove the password.
-Rumor has it that if you can find the "Engineering serial number" for the KPG-99, you can bypass the password.
-Get a refund.
No. I do not have the engineering serial number for the software. It's also usually forbidden to discuss things like that on this site.
Your best bet is to get a refund on the radio and try again. I'd be cautious buying radios from someone who doesn't know what they are selling. If you are looking to purchase used radios, using a company like www.used-radios.com (Sunny Communications) is a good idea. They'll support what they sell and they won't sell you a locked radio.
