Is Freescan still viable to program at 996P2? I programmed a 325P2 about 8 years ago by logging into RRDB. I remember Freescan being much easier.

Just got a 996P2 and am trying to use Proscan, but am finding it totally impossible to get started. I'm trying to import from Radio Reference Web and I get a message that says a database file must be open. When I try to export a county from RR, it exports as a CSV file. I tried converting that to a txt file, but Proscan gives an error (error retrieving file), check if valid.

I just want to be able to log in to RR and choose frequencies.

Support for the 996p2 & 325p2 is "experimental" and there haven't been any updates since 2015 so it's basically abandonware at this point. Did you do as the pop up suggested and create a new database file or open existing? After doing that you'll be able to import from RRDB web

The Proscan manual explains everything clearly & concisely. Its developer Bob @ProScan has a very active forums presence and can answer your questions

OK, Thanks, I'll forget about Freescan. Figured out how to create a file and how to import things. By comparison, Sentinel and Freescan seems much easier. Bob must be a million times smarter than me to develop this.

I can definitely see why people pay for someone to program their scanners. Sometime it's just easier and less of a headache.

Better to learn how to do it yourself than to rely on someone else to fix a mess up or update your scanner whenever there's a change IMHO. If you decide against it, why pay someone? Programming files can be easily zipped up and shared as attachments. There are a number of "captain code plugs" right here on the forums who'll help you with programming for free

I hear you. It's just really complex for laypeople. Plus, a lot of tiny letters on the screen are hard on the eyes too. It's like cutting my grass--I can cut it with a lot of struggle, but it's easier to pay someone to do it. Sometimes you get to the limits of your physical power or in this case, brain power.

You need to do what it says. Click on "Database" then "New". It will pull up the Windows "save file" dialog box. Pick a location where you want your database stored, then give it a name. Click "Save". Now you can do "Database" "Import" "Radio Reference" and download what you want from RR.

Proscan needs a database file open in order to store the data you are downloading from RR. Since you don't have a database file, just create an empty one.

Freescan 2.19 here and even 2.18/2.16 if I recall works perfectly on 996P2(I own)/325's as I've helped many people with those radios, no issues unless again for DMR for which only two and I have acquired DMR upgrades and I use there is ARC-XT.

Side note, if you want to try is easiest way to "convert" to-from software's is to just send to the radio with freescan, then bring up Proscan and use that to download into the radio.

Thanks. I finally figured that out.
