Some time ago I tried ProScan for use with a BC780-XLT I had at the time. I thought it was pretty good software for programing/controlling the BC780, but at the time it did not support the BC296D/BC796D, which I also had. I was looking for a one-does-all solution, or at the very least, software for each that had a common user interface, and some compatibility between data files. The natural choice was Butel's fine software, which I still use today.
However, I decided to pay ProScan's web site a recent visit and was pleased to see great progress has been made! Bob is now supporting the BC250XLT, BC296XLT, BC780XLT, BC785D, and BC796D. It also has modest computer hardware requirements, and will run on Windows ME, Windows 98SE, Windows NT, Windows 2000, Windows XP, and Windows Server 2003.
Here is what's really cool! ProScan also supports "Scanning over I/P!" It supports streaming audio, and data, Proxy Support, and Real Time Servers On-Line List! No extra software required. ProScan can function as the server, and the client. For others wishing to view your ProScan server, they can download ProScan "Client" absolutely free!
I downloaded this software onto to my dedicated scanner computer. In ten minutes I had it controlling not one, but two BC796D scanners, and serving them both over my home network! Using the free ProScan client, I was able to watch, log, listen, and record both scanners anywhere in my home! I didn't have to change any router or firewall settings to do this on my internal home network. Using the free client I was also able to view numerous other ProScan servers on the interned, connect, log, record and monitor any of them. I haven't put my scanners on the Internet yet, but plan on trying that soon.
ProScan also has it's own message forums where you can discuss the product, make suggestions, etc with other users as well as the developer, Bob.
I still value all my software from Butel, and I won't claim that either is better than the other, just different. Depending on your particular needs, and what you're doing at the time, you may prefer one over the other. In any event ProScan is worth a look.
ProScan offers a fully functional 30-day trial for free. Registration is $50.00.
