Hey gang! First post after sandbagging for a while. This is a fantastic resource for a person getting back into scanning, after I spent many years scanning all the conventional frequencies I could find from Police Call, etc... :)

So, last summer my trusty RS scanner (don't remember the number) was stolen from my vehicle. Pretty ticked off, but I didn't use it every day, so it wasn't a major loss. I haven't gotten around to getting a replacement until this weekend: bought a used Pro-164 off eBay, so I should be getting it in a couple days. Did a lot of research, *but* just realized today that most Providence municipal services use digital, and I just don't have the $$ for a digital scanner. Any recommendations/suggestions for interesting frequencies I could listen to from Providence? Looks like Prov and N. Prov are both digital (which was what I was aiming to listen to...)

Sorry for the newbie questions, but I feel like a tool for not finding this out earlier...

Save your money and get a digital scanner. About 70% of RI public safety agencies are now on the RISCON digital network.

I also enjoy listening to the Providence area action. I "DO" have a programmable digital scanner that I spent about $500.00 on. Plus an expensive mobile antenna. (whoever it was that gave me that info was correct, it works fine).

But just to let you know, I bought a GRE500. Works preety good once the channels are programed in for me. But I hadn't been on this site lately and now I see that even more depts (police/fire) have gone digital. I had a good friend program it for me, but now some of that is AGAIN outdated.

But as was reported earlier, if you want to listen to R.I. you probadly should get a digital scanner. I do know that some of the prices have come down since I bought mine. If you can, go out there and mow a few lawns or shovel some snow, Seriously. You'll get that money pretty quick. You only live once and enjoy the little things in life that make you happy.

Hey gang :)

Finally got my stuff together (with some holiday $) and bought a PSR 500 off eBay for $285. Upgraded to a premium subscriber to be able to load up the scanner w/frequencies, now just waiting for the scanner to arrive. Looking forward to chatting w/you all about RI scanning :)

Thanks russellmaher! The radio arrived and is in perfect shape, so I've been having some fun learning about how to use it, etc :)

I'd consider the disc tap, but only if my skills were a lot better then they currently are. With my luck, I'd turn the scanner into a brick!

I listen on here to Providence City Fire. I am very thankful to the individual who provides that service to us.

On the morning radio test I hear them say operating on a frequency of 853.7125. I know it's digital and I have the portable digital scanner for my trips up there. But I really want to ask this question. If I were to just put in that frequency, would I hear the Providence Fire Dispatch. Or do I still need those talk groups.

I got lost and have never found my way back once they left 154.37 mhz. (Same for police with 460.10). I just don't know anymore.

That is the Providence Zone control channel freq. If you program that freq in a digital scanner in P25 trunked mode you should be able to hear all the users operating on that system including Providence fire and police.

Thank you for that information. I usually scan trough the entire system on my scanner. Can I lock out one or the other ? If I want police only, can that be done.

It was just so easy before. I honestly have no idea how these things work now. Can I just pick one or two channels to listen to for fire and/or police ?

I do want to Thank You "N1RGR" for your advice.

And thanks to the provider of the online service for the Providence FD.
