So I'm wondering if I should invest in a new scanner that can pick up psp phase 2. I hear that everything will be encrypted? If they are can one still hear the specific talk group for let's say the Dunmore troop R barracks as some type of buzz or sound? I mean if they transmit on a tactical channel for vice and narcotics technically you can still tell if they are active and transmitting correct? I personally think everything should not be encrypted however only these specific units. I see people posting talk groups and such for the new system but what good is it if they are encrypted? Thank you in advance

PSP is 100% encrypted and will remain that way. There is no point in purchasing a new scanner if your intention is to listen to the PSP. Of course you may want to purchase a new scanner to listen to other agencies/systems that are not encrypted.

The talkgroups are identified, discussed, and added to the database for reference purposes. The RadioReference database is intended to be a catalog of what's out there on the airwaves, monitorable or not.

There's so many other comms out there in the clear to listen to, so don't let the inability to listen to one agency or another due to encryption stop you from buying the radio of your choosing. Good luck with your purchase!

How does one know what channel or talk group a specific unit is if they are encrypted and can not be heard? Does this information come from the FCC?

I'm probably going to go with the trx2 because of the free upgrade options. We have a local pd that uses dmr and I'd have to pay additional if I purchased the uniden. Is there a list of other agencies that will be on board with this new phase 2 radio system that PSP uses?

Does anyone have the frequency, talk group channels, etc for psp Wyoming and Dunmore for both their dispatch and other individual units such as vice, narcotics, organized crime down in Hanover barracks? Thanks in advance I think I'll order the scanner anyways

The system is still being built out. If they aren't on RRDB, they probably aren't online yet or if they are, no one discovered them yet

I would not invest in a TRX-2. The Whistler units are terrible. Uniden isn't much better, but I have heard that the SDS-100 does work pretty well. Just my 2 cents. And while PSP is in fact 100% encrypted there are still going to be plenty of users who are not (think: PennDOT safety patrol tow trucks). Good to have that if you travel the highways...

Ty but I'm not what else offers free upgrades the new uniden doesn't. I think that even though psp is 100 encrypted one will still be able to follow talk groups and even possibly identify them to see when they were active etc. The state has a ton of agencies on it so I'm wondering if the game wardens will be encrypted along with the AS office. Your right Penn dot and other agencies should be in the clear. I can't afford to spend 700 bucks and also another 80 for the upgrade. So the trx-2 even though went up in price might be the best alternative for me. Like I said free upgrades sold me.

I somewhat agree, however, but if it's 100 encrypted how could you verify it? Does it come from the FCC because a user couldn't determine for what unit ie., vice, narcotics, fire, etc the transmission is coming from. If anyone knows please chime in

No, it doesn't come from the FCC. Often information comes from reliable sources. Just because something is 100% encrypted doesn't mean it's 100% secret.

Food for thought: Just because Whistler offers free upgrades, doesn't mean they work as expected. The DMR/NXDN upgrades do not properly trunk track. The Whistler simply scans the voice frequencies. For small systems this is no big deal, however on larger systems it could be a problem. Be advised, the TRX-2 has it's problems. You can find more on those by searching the Whistler forums. Long story short, it has squelch issues and IMHO, scans much slower than it's hand held counterpart the TRX-1. I have a TRX-2 I rarely use.

Now, I am in no way bashing the Whistler scanners. I have a TRX-1 I use every day to monitor the StarNet P25 system. It works well on that system, especially since I can actually track the PSP talk groups in my area. Even though they are encrypted, the TRX-1 will not skip encrypted transmissions like the Uniden will.

That said, I always turn to my Unidens to listen to DMR and NXDN since they do properly trunk track.

Not trying to scare you away from the TRX, just giving you the info on the "free upgrades". You don't need to buy an SDS scanner either. If simulcast isn't an issue, the Uniden 325P2 is a fine little scanner which can be had on Amazon for about $340. Amazon.com: Uniden BCD325P2 Handheld TrunkTracker V Scanner. 25,000 Dynamically Allocated Channels. Close Call RF Capture Technology. Location-Based Scanning and S.A.M.E. Weather Alert. Compact Size.: Car Electronics

You could probably get the 325P2 and both DMR and NXDN upgrades for about what you would pay for the TRX-2 on Amazon.

Keep in mind, if simulcast is an issue in your area, neither the TRX series or the 325P2 will work very well and you'll probably end up with an SDS scanner in the long run.

I have a TRX 2 and the front end filtering is horrible. As I pass Center City I can hear the NWS (162.475) in the background of any analog transmission on any frequency. And don't get me started on the squelch. I asked Whistler Wendy about and she said they changed the way the squelch circuit works. I said well you need to change it back! But I digress... and the scanner collects dust...

And companies named Uniden, Whistler, Unication, Motorola, etc already had good filters included in their equipment until the TRX-2... *shrugs*

Thank you for the information. I however, purchased the TRX2 because for my area, it fits the bill. Plus I paid far below the price online. No if I can figure how to program it or somehow import Uniden database file....
