Hello, I am looking to purchase a scanner for Columbus, Ohio. I do not have any knowledge or experience with scanners. I have tried to research a lot but it gets quite confusing to me. I do not know what type of scanner I need for Columbus, Ohio. If anyone has recommendations please let me know. I am looking for a handheld scanner. I'm not sure what else I should mention. The budget isn't high, but please don't let that keep you from making recommendations as I can save up.

Thank you.

Because of the various different radio systems in use in Central Ohio, what you will need to buy depends on who you want to listen to and what radio system they're on. You might start by listing the individual agencies that you want to listen to, perhaps in order of importance, and using that to help you decide on a scanner. Simply speaking, it comes down to whether or not to buy a digital scanner.

Columbus Police, Fire, and most (but not all) of the suburbs are on Columbus's analog 800MHz trunking system; you don't need digital scanner for that. Columbus doesn't seem to be planning to go digital any time soon, so if you want to save money and are mostly interested in listening to them, you would probably be safe with an analog trunking scanner. I can't think of any current models off the top of my head; someone else can chime in with recommendations there.

On the other hand, OSP, all of Delaware county public safety, all of Union county public safety, and a number of suburbs in Franklin county are on digital systems (MARCS or the delaware county COIRS system). If you want to listen to any of them, you'll need a digital scanner. The handheld that I would recommend is the Radio Shack PRO-106. I have the base/mobile version of it (PRO-197) and a friend has the 106. It is pretty easy to use (considering the inherent complexity of it), and it works well. If you look for gently used ones on here (in the classified section) or on eBay you can pay considerably less than new price for one. I also own a Uniden BC-396T and am happy with it as well. Properly programmed, it can be fairly easy to use.

If you have any further questions, feel free to ask.

You can check Universal Radio's website, they have some used scanners somewhat inexpensive, a 396T is 249.99 I think which I THINK is a decent price. You can also visit their showroom and play with live models of a lot of products. If your in Columbus just take 70 to Brice RD. Take Brice to Tussing, turn onto Tussing and take that Americona PKY and you will find Universal.

Thank you very much for the replies, I have to do some more researching. I am on a very tight budget, but of course I want the best scanner that I can get, I continue to check craigslist but I have a feeling I'm going to have to buy it new. If anyone has more suggestions I would be very happy, thank you.

Speaking from personal experience, you probably aren't going to find much of anything on Craigslist. If you want to buy used, check out ebay. There is always a ton scanners on there, and the analog ones especially can be found for very cheap. Just know what you are buying, and buy from a reputable seller.

Go to Universal Radio and do your comparing there. It doesn't get any better than when you can put your hands on the real deal. I might suggest the PSR-500. It comes with everything you need to get it up and running other than the programming software. Even easier, the PSR-800 with the whole RR database at your fingertips:)

I have always been a state patrol listener, saved my money for years when things were tight, when OSP and Ohio did the Marcs thing I almost bit on the first one. Glad I didnt because they upgraded their 800 and the newest scanners receive the baud rate they now use. Only problem is OSP is using encryption for speed control one of teh primary reasons I wanted a marcs radio. So now I am unable to hear the plane and cruiser comm. Before you go and sell offthe farm make sure you can hear what you think you want to hear. technology has a way of biting you and making equipment obsolete. Just my two cents worth.

Follow Sspnelson advise!

And do your research and some more research. And last but not least, do some more research. What the other posters have commented on are worthy to note. Encryption is the one thing that'll bite you in the arse. If an agency has gone digital, that's one thing, (you buy a digital scanner); But if they use encryption, well you're SOL. Also, use RR's database to help you do your research.

Look at technology. Back in the late 80's Manatee county went with an Old GE Erickson sytem that used tones after every transmission. Pretty much unable to follow on a regular scanner, trunktrackers werent available. then when TT became popular, they and the rest of Florida go with ProVoice a system that is totally unmonitorable. This seems to be the trend in technology, so departments can be not have anything they say be heard.Encryption!! I dont agree with it but those who want it control the pursestrings.
So in that case I would have bought a TT radio and found it good only as an anchor. I suggest you listen to departments using radio Ref and see who you can hear. There are many on here with thorough knowledge of departments and what they are using, dont hesitate to ask for help, but be prepared to lose it all. Money wize that is.

ProVoice is not inherently encrypted, there are just no current scanners that decode ProVoice. It can be decoded with a computer.

Back on topic: OP, have you made a choice?
