LaPorte man arrested after robbery, pursuit with child in car
A LaPorte man was arrested Thursday night, Oct. 28, 2010, after he allegedly robbed an undercover informant during a cocaine purchase and then led police on a chase with a small child in his car.
Christopher N. Kelly, 26, of 104 Jefferson Ave., is charged with two counts of dealing cocaine, Class A and B felonies; armed robbery, a Class B felony; and neglect of a dependent, a Class D felony.
At about 4 p.m., a LaPorte County Metro Operations Unit confidential informant was trying to purchase cocaine from Kelly in the 200 block of Pine Lake Avenue, according to a press release from the LaPorte County Sheriff’s Office. Kelly, armed with a handgun, robbed the informant and fled.
A short time later police saw Kelly leave his home and drive away in a Buick LeSabre. Police stopped him at Grove Street, but he began to ram one of the police vehicles, then sped through LaPorte and north to the Indiana Toll Road.
Troopers from the Indiana State Police joined the pursuit and at the 16.2 mile marker, Kelly’s car struck another westbound vehicle from behind. His car was disabled and he was taken into custody. That’s when deputies discovered that a 22-month-old child was in the vehicle. The child was not injured, but was transported to Northwest Methodist Hospital in Gary for observation. The child was not in a restraint seat. The Indiana Department of Child Services was notified and took custody of the child at the hospital.
There were no injuries reported to the occupants of the vehicle that Kelly struck.
Kelly was being held on $25,000 bond at LaPorte County Jail.
