When I opened up my R-71a to install a new memory board, I found some wires taped to the shield under the main board. Does anyone know what they might be for?

Options for the R71A were TCXO, FM unit, Remote Control, EX310 voice board and the UX14 CI-IV/CI-V converter which replaced the earlier EX309 interface.

The voice board, CI-V Interface and remote board attach to the bottom plate and plug into the connectors along with multi pin headers on the logic board. If you go to the ICOM Japan site the R71A owners manual has installation procedures for the options.

I have picked up most of the options for my R71A except for the CW filter and they make the radio nicer to use.

Also when I was at the swapmeet in March Kuni had some stuff he was selling as he is retiring from his Icom repair business and I have a spare original Icom UX14 with instructions.

Interesting. I guess it doesn't matter as per my other thread - the R71a is dead.
