My R30 display is basically unreadable unless the backlight is on unless I have it in direct light.

I can read it without the backlight if I pick it up and twist it to get just the right place to just read it but it is kit easy

I just wanted to see if mine has an issue or it is normal

I must ask, did you adjust the contrast yet?

Also, your question made me wonder about the battery life if I always leave the backlight on, but set it to "dark". Time will tell. I previously had it set on "Auto".

Perhaps it is not that legible. I can easily see the main/sub frequencies and the signal meter, but the other small icons aren't too visible with the backlight off. I always had my backlight set to auto and just tried it with it off.

Is it possible your battery is weak? How many cycle charges do you have? Probably best to contact Icom repair to see if they even have parts for repair since its discontinued. It would be worth it to send it in if they do have the parts.

All R30 displays are like this, requiring more light than you might realise to see them clearly. Big bits of display will be better but little icons and details are a problem…I always wished the manufacturers would use eink displays!

To me it sounds like his display is failing. Can see this happening under heavy use.
Quite seriously, all R30 receivers suffer with this. Small elements are difficult to see without the backlight on if you’re not in a bright location And even then the angle has to be right.
