New R30 user here in Southern NH. I’ve programmed in a lot from the RR Database and find most activity from PD/FD and Air (I’m near MHT and 60mi from BOS).

I’m still learning this little receiver and appreciate all I’m reading here - keep it coming 😁

It’s a sweet receiver once you learn it. I bought the Icom software and works great. Am down in Colorado on vacation and was listening to EAM’s mid day on HF frequencies. I think it’s the best handheld receiver on the market. Just need a base station version and I’ll be set.

I just upgrading from the R20 and will be working my way up the learning curve. I do find this receiver and its menus to be a little bit more intuitive than the R20. I plan to use it mostly for Mil Air and HF marine traffic.

Just got my IC-R30 a few days ago and I love it. I mainly use it to scan VHF air and railroads due to the blazing fast scanning speed.

Had mine almost a year and have yet to actually use it for more than a short while. Can’t get past the learning curve of using it but I wanted it for the scan speed.
Any tips to help me learn?

Which HF marine freqs do you find are most active? Out of all the utility listening I do...HF marine seems to be the least of what I reel in. Thanks.

I spend time on the Delaware Bay and along the Atlantic coast line so some VHF marine traffic, ship to shore, USCG and once in a while I pick up a navy vessel transiting from Norfolk VA.

I have found some YouTube videos to be helpful. You have to watch them several times as the presenter is quite familiar with the receiver and talks quickly and pushes the buttons even quicker. Practice is the best teacher.

Have you downloaded the advance manual? Read both a couple of times, then just play with it. Go through all the menus. Press buttons to see what it does. Once you get the hang of it, you will enjoy it more.

Quickest way to learn any receiver especially one that has a SD card. You don’t need the advanced manual unless you really want to get into the weeds.

Save your initial configuration and start pressing buttons. Get somewhere that seems wrong or broken? Reset your receiver with your backup.

Another great way to learn how an Icom receiver works is to get the programming software. Icom’s software explains every setting and feature in the built-in help menu.

GROUP LINK is how you can string together multiple banks and scan them all at once.

While scanning...pressing and holding SKIP when stopped on a channel activates temporary skip, which can be configured to skip for 5 mins, 10 mins, while currently scanning, or until powering off. This is a great feature!

On a german webshop page its says that the R30 is discontinued by the manufacturer and on a bulgarian site its quoted:

“We here-by inform you that the transceiver ICOM IC-R30 will be discontinued. Repair parts will be available to all distributors. Thank you for using ICOM two-way radios!“

There are several european shops who still have them on stock.

The IC R30 description pages are still actively displayed on both the US and Japan Icom sites even though distributer sites say out of stock. Does that mean the R30 will live on, who knows :)

My still performs flawlessly :) (y) Are you still monitoring with yours?
