If we could get allot of folks to send Icom a message to build a desktop version of the R30, maybe they will build it. But with chips for radios super low, could be awhile if they did.
The R30 and R8600 were announced together by Icom at a trade show in Japan. I remember translating the trade shows brochure someone had posted here before they had FCC approval. They eventually did publish an announcement and brochure in English for the two receivers for the US market but dealers could not offer them for sale or even mention a price until they received FCC certification.

I always took that to mean the 8600 was intended to be the desktop version of the R30. The two do share 'some' of the same features such as the modes they are capable of receiving but many other features are not shared between the two.
Then the 8600 does not have dual VFO's either.

If Icom used the same internal parts of the R30, but put it in a case the size of the SDS200, put a tad bigger screen on it, so it can be plugged into the wall, would think FCC certification would go fairly fast if needed certification. It could cut into 8600 sales though.

Yeah that's what I thought as well, the IC-R30 and IC-8600 were intended by Icom to complement each other.

While the 8600 is attractive for many reasons, I would order a desktop version of the R30 with the same capabilities and at around the same price point today without hesitation. It is an amazing receiver. If it had a larger color display I might order two.

Ditto.

The 8600 is very nice but I would also like a desktop receiver that replicates the R30 capabilities similar in size to the Uniden SDS. It would be an instant purchase.

Icom isn’t hurting for sales but I do think they really need a receiver between $800-$1200.

I also wouldn’t be opposed to seeing what they could do with the 8600 or R30 guts in a black box which could be similar to the old PCR models.

Refreshed PCR1500/2500? Yes, please!!!:giggle:

If Icom made the R30 into a box similar to the SDS200, with same size screen as the SDS200, doubt it would be same price as the R30. If it was under $900 though, Would get it in a heart beat. A waterfall display would be nice but not at the expense of higher prices though. Phase II and DMR would be great but not holding my breath on the DMR.
