I finally got around to firing up an R71a I had gotten on eBay. "Dead. Won't power up" the auction said. Okay, I figure it's the power supply, so I bid, won, and it sat in the shack, essentially untouched for 6 months. Yesterday, I got it going on 12v DC and it works great!
Now, I don't expect an answer here, but I'll ask anyway - when I tune from 1610khz down to 1590 and below, when it crosses 1600khz the sensitivity goes from normal to WOW! as if the pre-amp is engaged all the time.
I know there is a mod which allows you to enable the pre-amp on MW (normally you cannot) but can it be set up to be on all the time? (which is what it seems like). I'm not complaining, this rig is SMOKIN' on MW with my 7 ft loop, I'd just thought I'd bring it up for discussion.
Anyone?
(need to order caps to rebuild the AC PS)
Addition: THis effect is really pronounced in AM mode. For example, tuning in to the carrier of a station on 540khz, the S meter reads S 9. Flipping to USB, LSB, or RTTY the S meter reads S9. Going to AM ... the S meter reads S9 +30! Whoa !
There's definitely been some modifications done on this rig.
