This whole race scanner industry was started by Glen Aikenhead, a former oil field worker in Alaska. I met him when I was the Indy car tech for Racing Radios in the late 80s. At first we never gave out freqs, I think someone at NASCAR may not have liked the idea and since Racing Radios was tight with them followed their request.

I got Glen a CART credential which we called hard cards for some reason. He started renting from a Ford van, by the time he sold Track Scan he had 5 or 6 tractor trailer units selling and renting at tracks.

Racing Radio Ultimate Guide nice basic tutorial credited to zipscanners.com

One minor correction to there answers. About scanner "range"besides The Nascar repeaters and media repeaters/base stations.. It is rare to pick up the radio conversations much beyond the racetrack property. Media/Nascar convos using base and repeaters depending on antenna placement you may pick them up few miles away. The teams comms basically cover trackside/track property. Granted if your a few miles from track at your home/hotel/your office and have a decent gain antenna your odds may be much better lol. Years back I struggled to pickup the fanvision uhf and microwave signal in parking lot. Connecting a external antenna helped. Same with Racing Electronics and former Track Scans uhf ota.

Could this thread be left open/stickied or made a wiki? When reading about who made/designed the Re3000/,2500 scanners and reading about the Trackscan/Re 440, I read about the owner of Kimark and read a obituary it had information about him working in Nascar field.

Thoughts? I thought it answered alot of the common questions.

Slightly off topic but my first "500" was in 81 or 82. Not sure if it was dry that year or the infield mud slide competition. Anyway, as a lifelong scanner owner/operator, I brought my portable programmable to the track a couple of years later to listen in with a basic search. Heard plenty of comms. Never saw any other people with scanners or headsets other than team members. Don't remember the model of scanner other than Bearcat Electra, but if you were at the 500, in the infield in the early 80's, there were "other things" that caught your attention. 5th ammendment rules apply here. Thank you guys for providing and updating the frequencis.

Glen Aikenhead started Trackscan in the late 80s, before that it was Racing Radio's policy to not give out team freqs. Since most did not have licenses when I started with Comtrack in 1985 there was no easy way to get them.

Once John Thornton, president of Racing Radios, figure out he could make money from little or no effort we started selling lists for $5.
My dad handled the freq sheet sales in my office in the garage area so I could concentrate on the tech side. Good times.
