hi Guys

Does anyone have a radio they can recommend to me?
My troop does alot of camping, and has always wanted a WX radio just incase severe weather etc is ahead. I am trying to find one under $80.00

Go check out RadioShack.com.

They've got a couple handheld portable units that would be perfect for camping trips and hiking adventures. Just cram it in your back pocket or in a backpack and go!

I think they're also SAME programmable... They run around $50 bucks I think..

You could study for the test and try to get a ham radio license. If you had one, then you could buy a ham radio that had a weather alert feature built into it for just a few dollars more.

If your troop does a lot of camping, it could be useful for someone (or multiple) people in the group to have a two-way radio. You could also make a merit badge project out of it couldn't you?

Yeah about as useful as having Wx Alert on a scanner. You have to dedicate it to that cause, and if you're going to do that, just tune to the freq.

I think his HT1000 is UHF.

Oh ok. Eh, it's easier to just get a little handheld weather radio for $50 than monkey around with radio modifications. (Unless you monkey around with radios as a hobby) :)

No amount of monkeying around is going to receive VHF on a UHF HT-1000. Unless you replace the entire RF board, and he's not about to do that.

A OREGON SCIENTIFIC ALL HAZARDS WR103NX is great small weather radio. look at the link below or on ebay search under (OREGON SCIENTIFIC ALL HAZARDS) lyou should get it cheaper.
This portable Public Alert Radio provides emergency alerts anywhere in the U.S. When traveling, boating, hiking or working outdoors, use the WR103NX to receive weather information and emergency broadcasts from the National Weather Service.
