I was one of those guys who got a complete set from Gene every year and I had them all until I was fixing to move a year and a half ago. I brought a huge box to a CARMA meeting and let everyone snag what they wanted.

During the late 80's I was working details where I had to sit in the car basically all day with nothing to do so I brought a scanner and the current set and copied skip. Since I had a PL decoder on the scanner I logged hundreds of stations from all over the US and into Canada (OPP was still on low band then). They really helped identify distant stations. Many times all I had was the time zone and a city name to go on, that was usually enough.

Final Southern California Edition

Here's the cover of the final Southern California Edition (which I still have), in which Gene announces that it will be the final Southern California Police Call on the Editor's Page.

I miss the Police Call books. It was an almost mandatory purchase each year if you were a scanner listener. Each year when I got the new one I never threw out the old one. I had them from 1982 through the end of Police Call, sadly I got rid of them all :( .

The Scanner Master guides were pretty good resources as well. I still might have 1 or 2 of them packed away somewhere.

I remember those Police Call books also. I use to buy one every year and spend days researching them and writing down all the frequencies in my area and where I frequently traveled. Then I would spend days manually entering these frequencies into my scanners. Was a lot of work but was fun. I am spoiled on the scanners today since they can be programed via computer but it is a whole lot easier in my older age.

Police Call

Funny to see this thread,,,,,,, I just opened one of my old ones about two hours ago to look for a mystery ARTCC frequency question from the Aircraft Forum. There was nothing listed that applied to the question, on the Internet of the Earth, so I decided to go old school.... take care

I saved the last two issues, when users change freqys i find them in my area in the book and write in the new freqy and PL-DPL and date, its getting to be quite a catalog....Its suprising how many depts still use the same freqys since 2004.....

I have found those books to be helpful when they had a section showing the frequencies of those places who have traveling shows and appear in various towns - like a rodeo. It enables a listener attending one of those events to not only listen in or the local arena's goings-on, but also the talk between the performers and their management who have their own radios & frequencies.

I remember those days. The first edition of Police Call I had was in 1977. It had an orange cover IIRC and covered the northeast region.
Now if someone can find an original Gene Hughes' Police Call from the 1970s with the pink cover, that'll be a find. I used to buy the old Police Call every year with its pages of frequencies that looked like they were typed on an old IBM Selectric. Ah, those were the days.:)
