I had this same thing happen on my PRO-197. It's never left on for more than 8-9 hours a day (use it in my office), and it just started doing it today. Any clues as to a possible cause? I turned it off than on again and it corrected itself, but I'm not going to be a happy if this becomes a common occurrence.

I'm wondering if it is a connection problem with the ribbon cable?

I'm here a lot
I say put it on e-Bay as a "rare" article.
I'm sure some "complete-ist" collector will just have to own one.:D

I feel like your problem is related to the wall wart power supply that comes with your scanner.
These things are not regulated. I NEVER USE them with an expensive radio like my GRE-600.
I measured 19.63 volts output with my fluke digital meter. That is what is screwing up your display.
if you,re using the black wall wart that came with your PRO- 197,STOP AND PUT IT IN THE
TRASH CAN. i am using a radio shack 3 amp regulated power supply. This all you need to
power your scaner from 120 ac power. Find you a good 3 amp regulated power supply and see
if your problems with the display stops. GOOD LUCK.

The a.c power supply thatcame with my GRE-600 measured 19.63 volts at the output. I feel
like that is the problem with your pro-197. Find you a good 3 amp 13.8 volt power supply like
radio shack sells. I have had two them for years with no problems at all. The newer one is
an inverter type. is is very light in weight. Good luck.

what about using the wall wart that comes with the PRO 197 ?????

check the voltage coming out of it and see if it stays below 16volts, most of these radios are good from about 11 volts up to 16 volts but shouldn't use outside of those numbers as it can damage the unit...

I finally did a complete reset on my Pro-197 a day or two ago. I haven't had any issues with the display since. I also keep the scanner warts pluigged into an APC UPS. I hope they keep the power clean like they say they do.

I checked mine - just under 19v. I'm going to replace it.

However, you do not need a 3A power supply. The factory PS is rated at 600mA and is probably overkill even at that output.

I'm not an EE, but I doubt the load from the radio is going to pull voltage down at all, or at least not much. I think these things are just mis-labeled, but I'm open to correction.

Even a regulated supply can be pulled down with a load. An unregulated supply will likely be pulled down more.

One of my scanners' power supplies shows 13.8VDC with no load. It goes down to ~11VDC when connected to the scanner. Another starts at 13.25VDC when not connected, and goes down to 10.5VDC under load.

I checked another PS this morning. It reads 12.05v with the radio off and 12.01 with the radio on.

Yes, I just experienced the same identical problem. I have left the scanner on for 3 or 4 days but just tonight all text is backwards. How weird!

Radio shack sells a regulated wall wort that's switchable 3-4.5-6-9-12 volts. Radio shack also sells the same unregulated. I paid something like $30 USD for the regulated one. Definently get the regulated one that cost more $$.

In an unregulated power supply, the voltage output depends on the current draw from the scanner (or other device). Any scanner will draw more current while receiveing and volume is up. When the squelch closes, the current draw is much lower, and voltage goes up. If the scanner is put into battery save mode, the current draw will go up then down at regular intervals. When this happens the voltage will be all over the place. I can definently see issues cropping up if using unregulated power supply.

A good general rule of thumb is: if the wall wort is very light weight, it's a regulated switching power supply and should be safe to use. If the wall wort is heavy (containing a big transformer), then you need to inspect it to see is "regulated" or "unregulated". Most of the heavy wall worts are UNREGULATED and not safe to use.
