I spent a considerable amount of money at Radio Shack the past few months, starting when I first heard the local store was closing. But I am glad I did it the way I did.
When the mgr. first told me they were going on the chopping block, I bought some "Clearance" stuff. (Pre closing, usual clearance sale items) The following day I came in, and there was a noticeable amount of stuff missing, I asked him what was going on, he said the company sent some people over the night before to take all the "High end" stuff. He said he was going to start boxing up inventory to send them. I asked if anything was on sale, he stated everything was 20% off. I cherry picked a bunch of stuff I regularly buy from there, out of concern it was about to be boxed up and sent off. (And at 20% off)
Fast forward to about a week later, he said they were closing in 2 weeks, everything was now 40% off, parts bin stuff was "Buy $10, get 50% off" or something like that. I asked him for a box. I loaded up at that point on things I knew I would need eventually.
By the closing week, the store had been picked over pretty decent, but there was still a lot left. Everything was 60% off at that point, I asked for another box, I bought stuff I just wanted.
Closing day, I arrived at RS, went over to where the Manager had just pulled up in his truck, and walked in with him as he unlocked the door (There were some workers outside standing by a work truck, I guess they didn't realize he was the manager, and was getting there 10 mins early) I went in with him, he said "Those bags there, $10 each" and I started grabbing bags, there was maybe 12 large bags. I grabbed several, and those guys that were outside came running in, grabbing the bags I hadn't picked up yet. Just a minute later and I would have missed out. Turns out, they had driven over 50 miles to try to get all the bags. Oh well.
I still have bags and boxes of stuff I haven't even went thru, and stuff I am sure I'll never need. I have given away a lot of stuff (Hearing aid batteries to old folks I know, connectors, etc. to friends) But I don't regret spending the money on that stuff, and I'm glad it went down the way it did. I paid less than retail for the stuff I really needed (That would have been cherry picked by someone else had I tried to wait it out longer) and I paid pennies on the dollar for stuff I just wanted.
Sure hate to see them go.
