To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

Anyone know the difference between the 950 pro and this besides am for CB? Now if they increased the scan rate and other scan type adjustments, could sway me to buy one.

Looks like we get the extra antenna connector back for the receiver chip.
Interesting. Will keep an eye on this to see what else they added.

This looks interesting, and I'll probably get one, but this radio brings up some questions and concerns for me.

I think having an AM Modulator is cool, if not hugely useful in an HT. I think it's a horrible idea to allow that radio to transmit in the Civil Air band. Even if there were no malicious actors at all, it's just a matter of time before APRS packets or a repeater output gets cross-banded into the airband. That isn't going to do anything good for any aspect of the hobby. While it could be useful for ground crews at small airports, I'd imagine most private pilots would prefer an Icom.

And why all the sudden demand for 27 MHz AM in a handheld? It's not going to perform worth a flip without a big telescopic or external antenna. And if handheld AM CB really fits your needs, why not a President Randy or a Cobra? A big part of it is Swiss-Army-Knife-itis. We have the technology. We can rebuild him. We can make him better than before. So, heck yeah, put it in there!
But if you're not careful, a Swiss Army Knife will cut the hell out of you (images of someone cross-banding the Super Bowl onto an approach frequency come to mind).

All that aside, going back to separate antenna connections for the transceiver and receiver sections is a plus. Dual-watch of HF and V/U MilAir frequencies is easier and more effective with separate antennas. To do that fairly well with my 950 requires me to use an active loop, which is ok at V/U, but not nearly as good as a proper antenna for the band.

Aside from airband monitors, this could be a good radio for certain folks and situations. If you don't want/can't have a permanent mobile installation, a CB and dual-band mag-mounts with the 1000 would be a good, quick setup for close-in and repeater work. Put the CB antenna on the HF receiver and enjoy, then switch as needed.

When this thing comes out, I'd love it if we could get @niceguy71 to do a video review of its performance on 11 meter AM. It'll be interesting to see how it compares to existing handheld CBs.

And just so you know, the FAA has 1811s, so don't expect a letter from Uncle Charlie if you bust into the airband.

The 860, 880, and 950 already transmit FM in the MilAir bands. They are inhibited from any transmissions in the Civil Airband. More than likely this radio will transmit AM and FM in the military band. Hopefully they can inhibit FM in the Civil band.

Since we're talking about a Swiss Army Knife radio, why can't I have SSB in the transceiver? You just added AM, what's a BFO and a carrier suppressor between friends? New hams, SSB is a blast above 50 MHz, let me tell you. It's time to bring VHF sideband to the affordable market segment. If you're cool walking around with a 27 MHz antenna, a 2 meter halo shouldn't bother you(much).😆

Civil Air transmit makes me cringe, though. I just wonder how long it will take for someone to screw up royally.

Surprised FCC allowed this radio in the US if it can transmit in civilian air band.
If someone knows the full FCC ID, it could be looked up on the FCC's website. I looked using the "2AZSA" prefix that other Radtel radios use and didn't find it.

Our local Pilots left 205 up until they left the scene. They sit on the ground I would get the receiving Hospital info pass to the Pilot so he had everything ready when it was time to lift Fuel Weight Destination. We had and still have a very good working relationship with those crews.

The Radtel site shows this as an 8 watt transceiver. I'm seeing some stuff (some AI crap, some human crap) about the 1000 being up to 15 watts. It better have a helluva battery for that...

I did a quick search for an FCC ID, but came up blank.

I know these are aimed at hams, but it won't take long for the GMRS, MURS, preppers, CB'ers and every other hobbyists to find out.

No way it's going to get anything more than Part 15 unless they lock it down, but that'll get hacked. The Part 80, 87, 90 and 95 rules would get in the way of this ever being released with all its capabilities in tact out of the box.

It does concern me that it'll put that much tempting capability into the hands of some people that have proven to lack the self control to not abuse it. I think this is a place where the FCC needs to step in. Yeah, someone could easily buy multiple radios that will do all this, but one radio for a low price, marketed at hams and preppers is just going to be an FCC violation waiting to happen. I give it a year before some idiot cross bands CB channel 6 onto the local air traffic control frequency.

This one model should be banned because it transmits on airport am frequencies.
That's a little extreme, but Radel should probably disable transmit on the aviation bands. Hopefully they realize what kind of liability they're opening themselves up to before these radios hit the market. I'm usually pretty laid back about letting people decide for themselves, but this seems like one of those things that could create a bunch of fallout for Radel and maybe even other manufacturers down the road.
