• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

Thank you. I felt that.

...I am fairly easy to figure out who I am, but I would prefer not,

I don't want to, nor will I try to, figure out who you are.

for every person wanting to help make this work, there will be five calling where I work and causing me unnecessary grief. Where I am I am not a radio tech, just a mere end user / subscriber.

We have all we are going to get. You have to remember, in Tennessee, many agencies could not / would not get on the state system until the nextel bribe help money came in. If I want something, like the ability to scan, or monitor things, it will be on my own until I can prove it is worthwhile and the negative publicity from not having is greater than... not having.

Probably doesn't make sense, but it is what it is.

Can't say it makes sense on any level. The resources are out there, but some just don't want them. I know some like the bragging rights of doing everything the hard way and not accepting help from anywhere. I've never believed that was a good plan. Any public safety agency should understand the value of mutual aid. Grant funding is there and available for the asking, like mutual aid, but if they want to let it all go to other agencies, that is certainly their choice. Not a choice I agree with, but it's a choice.

I feel like I have hijacked this radio thread far enough. Again, thank you for all your concerns and input.

Yeah, I agree. Maybe worthy of a new thread if your agency is willing to accept some help from those that have been down this path.

Agency egos often get in the way, and all you can hope for is that the voters see that and respond accordingly. If citizens are paying federal taxes that fund the grants, and the agency refuses to utilize them, then the taxpayers need to start asking some hard questions. They are essentially paying taxes that are getting taken by those that are willing to ask.

I've decided against getting the 1000, even for a Christmas bonus, the usefulness/price equation just doesn't work for me.

~$100 difference between the 1000 and the 950 for little more than AM modulation and airband transmit. Both are things I'll never use. For the last price I looked at, I can get another 950 and a couple of 880s. Leaving 900 MHz out cuts the usefulness as transceivers for me, and the 18 - 64 MHz band isn't very usable as a handheld. I'd be fine with having the receiver expanded to cover 30 MHz to FMBC to have 900 in the transceiver.

Looking forward to some more reviews and user opinions on this. Some of the claims seem to be a stretch.

Hard to believe Radtel wants twice the price of the 950 pro for very little change. Am happy with my 950 pro so far. Just waiting on the next firmware update to fix the scan range issue.

For those with the 1000 pro, can you try scanning from 225 to 380 MHz? The 950 pro can’t do it. Can scan 380 to 400 mhz though. Already emailed Radtel about it. Said it would be fixed on next update. Just curious if it’s fixed on the 1000 pro.

Lets hope no one tries to yack on airband. But then again, can't fix stupid!
They will quickly be caught, sizzled like a sausage and fried well done. One thing one doesn't FAFO is aircraft comms, let's wait for the first enforcement action to be put on public display. Maybe this is what it will take, some ABC NEWS story about a "feeble old man" in a "nursing home" posting videos of himself talking to airplanes getting thrown on the pavement and put in flex cuffs, or a couple of military whackers in paint ball getup being taken down by a SWAT team.

Either way, it won't end well.

That's the reason I tested the radio on a dummy load ;-)

Well anyone can buy a legitimate airband or maritime transceiver on eBay and other places so it's not like unlicensed transmissions on important bands is a new problem. The issue with chicom gear is the spurious emissions that spew garbage all over the place.

Soon as mine comes off the proverbial slow boat, I will oblige you

Don't ruin the narrative! While I can't really say I've ever heard of people misusing airband, I have personally seen hunters using marine band radios way, way, way inland.

I believe you've hit the nail on the head with the bolded part. I started out with radios that needed crystals. What these things do now, in a form factor the size of some of my previous portables' battery... pretty impressive.

The RT-1000Pro doesn't look to cover from 174 - 350 MHz on any spec sheet I can find. It's not even listed in the receiver sensitivity sheets. Doesn't seem to have V-LOW or 6 meters either.

The 950Pro won't search through the military air band; I would assume that's because there's no Ham/LMR allocations in that segment. It's possible that you could modify that in the CPS, but I have no idea.

Does the 1000 pro have a super mode like the 950 pro? Am hoping the next firmware update corrects the scan function. The email I got back from Radtel said it would be fixed next update.

Everyone touted the 1000Pro as being the next step beyond the 880G, but it's seeming less like that the more I learn about it. It looks to have the three VFOs of the 880, but with greatly limited ranges compared to the 880.

I haven't definitively found out yet if the 1000 will actually tune the 225 - 350 MHz segment, much less function properly. Without that, its usefulness as a receiver gets limited for me.

As a transceiver, it doesn't have as much appeal for me, either. I don't need airband Tx, and 11 meter AM in a HH FM transceiver just feels gimmicky. And that includes having to change the antenna to something big enough to worry about bumping power lines.😆 33 cm/900 MHz is kind of underrated for HH simplex. Generally nice and quiet around big outdoor events with tons of VHF/UHF in use. I'd prefer having it in a radio over 27 MHz.

Does the 1000 pro have a super mode like the 950 pro?

I'm sure it will. I'm also pretty sure it will be called something new. Radtel doesn't seem to be able to keep the same translator on payroll between models.

The transceiver (BK4829) definitely supports it. Tested with a tone generator at 315 MHz with a modified firmware and confirmed it does RX (it can also TX with 6+ W). If you look up the BK4829 datasheet, it has typical sensitivity listed as -123 dBm.
