Rail scanning?

I have a RadioShack Pro96, which does receive quite well, but overloads with intermod hash when I railfan in Downtown Omaha, so I take my Uniden BC 60XLT, which actually seems to digest intermod better. Go figure! Cheaper scanner, better intermod performance.

Motorola CDM 1250 is also an excellent moble radio, coupled with TrainTenna, it is unbeatable, I use it to feed audio to my UP/BNSF Stream.

I use a Motorola MT1000 handheld, programmed with all the AAR channels. It will "scan" only a limited number (eight as I recall) of the 99 total channels in the set at a time, but that is not usually a problem if you are in a particular area and the channels to scan can be reset by the user "on the fly". Check on E-Bay and elsewhere - be sure the seller has programmed the AAR channels or you are getting at a price that makes doing so a reasonable option. It takes special equipment and software (Motorola copyrighted) to do so, though some hobbyists and ham shops can do it for you. These have a some limitations in terms of flexibility, but are specifically aligned to the VHF Band and perform exceptionally well.
