Yep. Could be less than a mile, or several dozen miles. Some systems I can pick up over 60 miles every day.
Some factors are:
Power of transmitter
Height of TX antenna
Gain of TX antenna
Height Above Average Terrain (HAAT) of TX antenna
Frequency
Sensitivity of receiver
Height of RX antenna
Gain of RX antenna
Height Above Average Terrain (HAAT) of RX antenna
But mostly, the terrain between the transmitting and receiving antenna.
The 'thousands of miles' case is not really predictable for the most part. At least not with any garuntees.
