Real newbie here!

I’ve been reading about systems but I have questions! My Harris P7200 has 3 systems in menu… can I change that, then load in new frequencies for local services?? Are there any things I should not try to change??

Currently
Firmware is XGP R02A26.
Options as follows:

That radio is pretty much useless, unless you are just programming 700 or 800Mhz P25C/Conventional channels.

There are a handful of open sky units that also had P25 trunking and all enabled as well and you can delete the open sky firmware then update as usually. Just don't try updating the ECP firmware without first deleting the OTP firmware.

You can reprogram whatever you want as long as you have the right software. But as stated above, if you want to listen to anything more than conventional, you are SOL.

You could have bought a P7100 a lot cheaper and have much the same radio functionally speaking.
Anything in the personality with open sky is going to be useless for you.
If NAS scanning in mind, it won't happen with open sky either.
These do great for anything conventional and really doubt you will find any EDACS left.
No clue what systems or sites near you so this is my 2 cents.

I now need to buy software, a connector cable, fix my laptop and try to delete firmware???

Not to mention there is nothing in the 7/800 band that you could (legally) transmit on. If you intended on using them for short distance communication, I wouldnt...

I'll assume you just want to monitor some analog or P25 convention channels (since your radio isn't provisioned for trunking). To answer your question... Yes, you can modify (or delete) the existing systems in the radio, and you can also add new ones. You need a laptop for this, with the appropriate cable, and at a minimum RPM10 programming software (R02A26 is RPM10 friendly).

Thank you for the information! My plan was as an emergency radio. Monitor local police, fire, emergency an have a few channels for encrypted comms with a friend!

Encryption will be tricky... You'll need the Harris KeyAdmin to make and load keys.

As mentioned earlier, you need a liscense to transmit on 700/800 MHz. Sounds like your trying to use these as "prepper" style radios. Good luck with that lol!

Just for the record, XGP firmware has nothing to do with Opensky. OTP firmware runs Opensky, and yes the p7200 can have both Opensky and XGP firmware at the same time. So if you have the features to do Opensky, but no OTP firmware, it won't work. Not that you're using Opensky anyways

Unfortunately for you, 800mhz is allocated for public safety use and there are no longer itinerant frequencies that you can license yourself for in order to be able to use them properly, Unless you really need 800mhz and P25, I'd sell them and look for another cheap solution that would work for you.

I thought I would post this additional comment/question to this thread. Is there a factory reset for the P7100ip radios? I was successful in programming the VHF 0013 version with ham frequencies. Its a great field radio especially on rainy days, etc. I am getting use to the HH mic antenna though. I've not figured out how to enable the antenna on the radio set when the HH spk/mic is attached. But I have not been successful in programming the 0016 or 0023 versions. Programmer tells me it loads the codeplug for the 0023 just fine. But I turn the radio back on and it has the old programming from the out of state agency who last owned it. I've done the reset and restore of tracking data and it always seems to work. I only want to do the 800mhz for 8-Tac frequencies, nothing else. Well, what else would you do? And I wanted to see if I could program the UHF-L version with some talk around frequencies in the 420-430 area of the radio. But so far, the VHF radio is the only one I can muster using Programmer 17A
