Found my father's old scanner. Turns on but no display. Worth trying to fix?

Maybe, depending on what is wrong with it, but the last time I opened up my PRO 2004 I found the connections to pots, etc. to break off easily due to age. I ended up having to re-solder connections I wasn't even working on. Does the squelch break with the control? When you enter a known WX frequency, do you get any audio? (I know there is no display but see if you can enter a frequency with the keypad and observe if it responds) Good luck... the older ones can be a difficult to repair due to age related issues and lack of replacement parts.

PRO-2003 manual shows a 9-volt battery compartment for memory retention on the rear of the scanner to the left of the 12v external power jack and AC cable. Try resetting the scanner. With unit off, hold down the 1 and the clear buttons together and turn on the unit. It has been my experience that blank or dim fluorescent displays are often caused by bad electrolytic capacitors.

IMHO, given the now limited coverage - unless you have a sentimental attachment to it since it was your Dad's, I would just look for a cheap replacement on eBay, Craig's list, etc. Maybe you can get something more modern that receives more frequencies. However, it also may be a fun project, so it all depends on your attachment to this particular scanner and your skill set.

Thanks for the help. It's probably just a source of small screws and an spare electric cord at this point. But fun to mess with...after all, I'm not gonna break it worse. Cheers
