I'm on the contsant prowl for vintage radios. My latest steal was a Pro-2005 on eBay. Someone posted it with just a picture of the box saying it belonged to her husband and has been sitting in the box for 20 years. Price was $25 shipped. Took a shot, and it was mint. Even the backlight.

Same here. My last find was a truly mint 2006, in the original wrapping and box with all original contents, string neatly tied on the top. Opened it up to find that it was as-new. $80.

Also watch your local OfferUp. Sometimes people sell great classic scanners that were basically never used for almost nothing....$20 - $40.

Nice scored, I would have been tempted myself.

Still have my heavily modded 2006 https://forums.radioreference.com/radio-shack-scanners/356215-dusted-off-old-pro-2006-a.html

Have been using it the past 2 days at a Tbirds airshow, and again on Sunday. Love the thing, thats all that I use it for airshows. Hooked up to a little amp it always draws a crowd, thing I like most about it is I can actually program it in their field when I find new freqs, unlike modern scanners.

Probe....

I've occasionally looked for an alternative, but have not found anything that beats Probe; I still run it on my Pro-2035/OS535, using DOSBox on a Windows 7 machine (I've also found it to work well on a Mac running DOSBox).

I did use Scancat Gold for awhile and it was pretty nice, but it's 16-bit software not capable of running on anything newer than Windows XP on a 32-bit machine.

Did that myself on my Pro-2004. Lots of fun. Unfortunately, while I have got it to sort-of work using DOSBox, it's somewhat unreliable. I'd love to find something more up-to-date.

I also built the Programit interface for my Pro-2035, but haven't tried it since moving to Windows 7; guess I'll have to give it a try sometime.

Tom

Sounds good. If I can get Probe to run in any manner, I'd be happy. Is it still available for sale? I used to beta test for Perry many years ago when I lived in Missouri, but I think he's moved on. I see Datafile still online, but I don't know if I'm looking at something that's still 'real' or just an online archive.

Thanks,
Forrest

I think it was Probe3 I bought and then upgraded to 4 and after that the betatesting started. Perry manage to include almost every feature that where suggested to him, a really remarkable man.

The website should be active. There are still some Icom pcr1000 owners that might be looking for Probe control. It wasn't long ago I had some email conversations with Perry who wanted to ventilate the possibilites to make a version that would work with modern scanners.

I still have my pro2004. I did every mod that Bill Cheek listed in his book. I even ordered one of the channel button overlays from Bob Grove when I upped it to 400 channels.

Thanks. I just ordered it, or I think I did! :) The website says to give them 24-48 hours to send a download link. I agree that Perry was always a good guy to work with. I'd say my contact with him and beta testing was in the mid to late 90's. As well as the OS456 and OS535, I also found that I still have one of the Optocom black box receivers. We shall see how this all plays out.

Thanks,
Forrest

My BBS was a node on Bill's back in the day. I can't remember what any of it was called, but it was fun with the extra phone line at the house. Seems like forever ago.

I ran a BBS back in the day too. It was fun until the internet came along and made them all obsolete.

Last time I talked with Perry several months back, the latest (last) version of Probe is still available.

Webpage still advertises it for $39.95 through PayPal with delivery via Dropbox:

https://www.datafileinc.com/purchasing.htm

Of course, there's the standard disclaimer Probe is a legacy application and sold “as is.” All sales are final. There are no refunds or software support.

Update: And I just saw that you bought it already; that'll teach me to respond without looking at the rest of the thread. . .

Got one for cheap this week, under $20.00 locally. Display dim as expected. No antenna, but heck I got many to spare.

Will mess with it this weekend from New Display to 400ch mod + 11MHz crystal upgrade + Discriminator Mod .. orgasmic haha :D

Mods done today, including adding a white panel to the 2004 instead of the blue one.

D-510 added - 400 channels / per bank

D-513 clipped - full 800mhz (useless) but done hehe

D-514 added - from 16 to 20 cps scan/search

CX501 removed - 11MHz Crystal added - Scans/Search about 32 cps

Added Discriminator Tap in the rear.

Total cost in parts - $1.25 (all electronics van nuys, ca)

I will try it a few days see if it stays white or swap for blue.

I put a blue backlight in one of my 2006's that I picked up cheap. People seem to either love it or hate it. I kinda like it.

Ditto. Blue seems much easier on the eyes. Guess I should get off the stick and "re-lamp" my 2006. . . .

Great thead and what an ebay find by the OP NYRHKY94 a beauty.
Some very nice pro-2004s on here, after all this time this 30 year old model still looks so cool !
I wish I could find a $14 steal of a lifetime like JustLou, goodwill store of the century !
$25 for a Pro-2005 ? What a machine, insane value !

google search 232779355171 and u will find the ebay seller where I purchase from, I've ordered 4 so far

He is a solid seller from overseas. I ordered July 28th and the panels arrived August 2nd and shipping fee was $4.00 for 2 panels.

Just an update here, I tried to search ebay with the item number above but no results.

I have just finished a backlight replacement on a Pro-2005,

I think the Pro-2004 used a light aqua blue panel and the Pro-2005 and Pro-2006 used a darker tron blue one, there is definitely a difference in colour and luminescence.

I have listed the supplier which may be the same one you used @Paco-Jerte..some nice LED mods there btw and $20 for your latest Pro-2004 purchase, another top drawer radio at a crazy cheap price ! Well done.

Heres the link to the Pro-2005 backlight job

https://forums.radioreference.com/r...-po-2005-deathtrap-backlight-swap-repair.html

Still looking for a cheap unloved 2004 this side of the pond but no luck..

Incidentally, reading the great sticky thread on Radioshack stores at the top of this page, many memories from store managers and employees.
