I won't say I forgot the lenght of the runway, I don't think I really ever knew exactly, but Columbus AFB in MS had a fairly long runway. It was an old SAC bomber base before it became a pilot training base. When I was there in the early 80's it was an alternate shuttle landing site and the shuttle never used a short runway.

Just checked and the main (center) runway is 12000 feet. 13R/31L is 6300 and 13L/31R is 8000.

)ther bases I was stationed at, Davis Monthan in Tucson, AZ is 13643 ft. Wright Patterson, OH is 12601 ft and Fairchild AFB in WA is 13899 ft.

There's also Vandenberg AFB, which is one of the shuttle alternate landing locations and 15000'.

Our old AF base north of Edmonton Alberta (CFB Namao), used to boast a 14000+ ft main runway. It was originally built as a dispersal base for flushing SAC a/c north (and thus closer to the Sov Union). For a long time, it held the title of the longest 'paved' runway in North America. When we shut it down and the Army moved in, they cut up most of the runway and the remainder was used as foundations for new tank sheds and running areas for driver training.

Ironically, when we had the base, all we flew there were Hercs, Twin Otters and Hueys. Not much need for that long a runway...

Colorado Springs Airport (COS) which shares with an Air Force Base has runways in excess of 13,000'.

Sort of. The info there is dated. I was stationed at Pete Field (Peterson AFB), which used to share it's runways with COS but COS has since moved about 8 miles east of Pete field and the old airport as far as I know is closed down. I moved from there in November. The last time I drove by was last Summer and it looked to me like even the old cargo terminals were abandoned. During numerous trips out east to Dragonmans and other good shooting spots, the only traffic I saw going into Pete was military (and that was sparse due to the war) and the only traffic going into the new COS was civilian. -Rod-
