I am a lineman for the county.
If you're getting screwdrivers, it's worth getting a set with JIS tips.. Similar to these: Amazon.com : JIS screwdriver

Most Japanese radios use this type of screw to hold on the case panels, PC boards etc.. JIS is very similar to Phillips and in most cases you can remove/replace the screws with a Phillips screwdriver, but the JIS will fit much better.. You'll have less chance of marking or rounding off a really tight screw.

Same with Japanese motorcycles. The Phillips drivers will slowly damage them, but they'll work in a pinch. A good set of JIS drivers, or at least JIS bits are a good option if you disassemble the radios.

Make the one-time investment in a crimp tool for PL-259 connectors and never struggle with soldering the braid again. ;)

Both in the military and then the oil industry (where many military communications technician types ended up), we were each issued the Weller/Xcelite TCMB100/ST or some version of this tool kit (ST-100, TC100/ST). These have wrenches pliers, screwdrivers, nut drivers and other specific tools for general communications service. Great kits, but we always augmented them with a Fluke multimeter, Harris buttset, and Tempo tone wand/toner. This will let you service mobile and handheld radios, antennas and related systems, and rack mounted gear. Buy these used or off auction sites to save money, the pallet based tool storage is great, but if you get the larger kits, get the rolling case, as the briefcase styles can get heavy after a while. Even for those that keep them at a bench or for home use. You will be glad should you ever need to take those tools with you.

What these kits also lacked was smaller tools, I recommend Wera, Wiha, and Klein Tools screwdriver kits, tweezers, alligator clip "helping hands" and the cheap Harbor Freight magnifying headband hobby tool (these are great for working with small pieces, checking for broken solder joints and damaged circuit boards, and helps you see the quality of your soldering work.
