While we're on the subject, I can't get my ScanRec to work. Line-In is working fine, audio coming from computer speakers, everything seems to be set up ok. Once I hit Record, it will not start recording anything. I have the squelch set at like 4 or 5%. Any ideas???

The other thing that I would have to say on the subject is have you tried recording from another source anytime before. Windows ships usually with the mic muted double click on the speaker in the task tray and then go to options and select advanced controls then make sure there is not a checl mark in the box for muted.

I'm having problems lately too. I open a new file, set it to recored as a MPEG Wave-3 as I usually do and then I get the ole-

"Scanner Recorder has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry ...."

Checking the report of what Microsoft found I get this-

"Error caused by Logitech SetPoint: no specific solution available
Thank you for submitting an error report.
Problem description
An analyst at Microsoft has investigated this problem and determined that an unknown error occurred in Logitech SetPoint. This software was created by LAME Project.
Recommendation
Microsoft has researched this problem with LAME Project, and they do not currently have a solution for the problem that you reported. Below is a recommendation to take that may help prevent the problem from recurring.
Contact LAME Project for support or product updates.
Additional information
If this problem continues to occur with the latest product updates for Logitech SetPoint, we recommend you obtain assistance and troubleshooting information directly from LAME Project."

I don't think I have changed any settings recently but there have been a couple of Microsoft updates installed. Any ideas? My os is XP and I was using Scanner Recorder up until a month ago with no problem.

Update your keyboard and mouse software from the Logitech website www.logitech.com the module that the program is crashing on is from your keyboard or mouse software you can also try and close that particular program before you try and record.

Ditto...its not working for me either. All the links get you to the download page, but it just doesn't download. I guess its something wrong on their end. Fireguy...I downloaded this software that TeRay suggested. It is number 1783 in the list, the one that says x20.zip , check it out its pretty cool!

Well I guess I will jump into this thread, for a few years I have been using Jet Audio pro, it was the only thing I could find that would auto name files, had timer and vox functions, but of course it is a large program, but you can save the file in any number of formats, from wav to mp3 and a gamut of others, I tried scanrec, quick record, they don't auto name the files, and have a vox that is flaky at best, but it works fine after you get it set. I also use wavepad but it has a -40dB top end on the vox, if you have any line noise at all, once it starts recording it won't stop, until you reduce the input level to a point below the preset threshold, a real pain.
I just downloaded Vox2File, I think I will try it for a while and see how it works, so far I like it.
I like the pseudo analog vu meter, and it looks good, neither of which makes it work better however, I will post my opinion after a few days, meanwhile keep looking for the perfect scanner/radio recorder, someday we will find it and it will be free or at least real cheap

I just downloaded xcorder. Pretty neat little program! I like the features...sound quality on playback is very poor...quite choppy, something I'm doing wrong?
I noticed the same thing when I first tried it as well, all i did was take that slider on the left and put it down to 1. I watched as my scanner would come on it would drop while the voice was not speaking, so like in between words it would stop recording. Try this and see if it works.

Recording your scanner with MusicMatch Jukebox 4

Recording your scanner with MusicMatch.
Old computors and old software are great for recording your scanner all through the night or when your not at home. Get a hold of a old computor that run's on Windows 98 or XP and a old audio card that has line input and the software called Musicmatch Jukebox 4 or higher versions of Musicmatch. Jukebox 4 usually came in demo CD's before high speed internet and on motherboard software and in the magazine, Maxium PC and many other software installation CD's.
Music Match was complete and you did not even have to buy a key unless you wanted to record at a higher KBPS anything over 128KBPS. The software will not time out if you did not buy the key. Older versions of Windows like Windows 98 or XP, that one has or got given to them as long as it has the proper installation key will work for you, it does not need to be updated unless you want to go on line and you do not need to, use your new computor for that.
Recording scanners with Music Match you can set the trigger or AUTO DETECT so that if something on your scanner is broadcasted, Music Match will detect it and record, and once the broadcast is over it adds the audio to the Music Match library. You can even record two scanners at the same time using the left channel for one and the right channel for the other scanner.[remember to use compatibility wizzard for XP & Music Match, set for win 98]
Alpha tags have to be typed in, it does not add tags except default tags, but after listening to your scanner, you will be familiar with were the broadcast came from.
I usually record the scanner and type in the date and what public safety or talk group I would be recording before leaving.
Test the recorder before leaving, make sure the trigger is working, since there are so many settings, it is easy to make a mistake and record nothing all night. Make sure it is set to line in on your mixer and also Music Match has line in checked. One can also set the trigger to record 4 seconds longer after silence, usually there is a reply to the first transmission within those four secounds. With MusicMatch any settings are possible, just experiment to see what suits you best.
The complete all night recording will show all the calls in tracks and the lenght of the tracks, one then can go over all the calls in only 10 minutes, usually when something important went on that track lenght would be the longest, this is usually dispatch.See the MOH on the screen, that was clicked on and there could be 100 calls on it alone, you can then drag that to your play window and listen, no gaps, it will go in order from track 1 to 100. See the OPP Middlesex, that has not been clicked on yet, but there can be 100 calls in that file, you just simply drag to the play window and it again will play in order with no gaps.
MusicMatch is now also available to download from the internet, something not possible a year ago.

Just be careful what you do with the recording. According to the FCC Rules and Regs, it is illegal to divulge the content of most radio communications to another person (ordinary broadcast and amateur radio are excluded). Last I knew, the fine was $10,000 for each and every day the offense occurs.

On a side note, in my opinion those scanists who broadcast their scanner audio over the internet are also breaking the same law.

Randy
Everybody has their opinion and is entitled to it. However when posting that opinion on a public forum such as this, you'd better make sure your opinion is accurate. If it was against the law to broadcast scanner audio over the internet, Lindsay would not allow it to happen on his web site.

No,I will not broadcast anything, but it's a good warning , I only record maybe once or twice a year, special events like county fair etc. for my own listening when I get up in the morning. My MusicMatch post is only to show how it can be recorded with that software. Again a good warning, I wouldn't chance it anyway's, not worth it.

I use ID Tracker II to record my RS Pro-197. I basically record it when I go to bed and listen to it the next day. There is not much that goes on around here that I don't know about.

Sound Forge is a great program, for editing , I have that also and use it all the time for editing other audio tracks. Hard drives are so big now that you can use that, but music match ver 5 has a trigger, it only records as it detects a signal and puts it right into the library, then you will only hear what is recorded. Soundforge is also good as you can move to the high spots on screen,
I started with MusicMatch in the day's of 2.2gig hard drives, it can be set low to 24kbps, doesn't take much space on the drive. Music Match will only record 100 tracks, that can easly happen in a few hours on a scanner, unless setting the delay time so it also includes the reply's.

I'm using VoxToFile v.2.0.2 It works fin except for a few short comings. when you click on recordig control it brings up the windows record setting thing, BS- WTF.

The biggest issues with the V2F software is it can't be told to record in any format other than wave. It says you can, but it don't say how & none of the controls allow changes. if anyone has any knowledge of How to make it record in MP3, I would appreciate any kind of head up.

Another issue is it likes to record the audio files in it's own program directory, not any kind of subdirectory, and like the VRS that we tried before it, it saves all the files in the same directory. We'd ideally like it to create a directory tree for year>Month>Day so all the files for one day are in a directory of their own. stuff will be a lot easier to find that way... like GeoVision Does.

I might have to write a VB program to crate these directories and move files where they belong. I have to wait 'till I get MY machine again working in order to have access to the VB development environment.

ProScan

I use ProScan to record a 996T and a 396XT 24/7. I have a share on my Windows 2003 R2 server with a HDD just for the scanners. I have a dedicated PC for the scanners and ProScan that maps a drive to the share. In addition to being able to stream the scanners, I have a webshare setup so I (or anyone else) can use browser and listen to any recording over the past few months.

In linux, Audacity will do VOX recording, but it doesn't time-stamp.
