• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

I started as a trucker 30-years ago. I know — down to the bone — what matters for this business tool where both health & wealth are on the line.

I’ve already covered why I wouldn’t bother with an obsolete radio and why in this thread. And in many posts elsewhere.

You came to a forum where participants are far above average in understanding and use of CB both for their livelihood and as well-informed hobbyists. Mobile, or Base. Portable operation, or with handheld.

Tech Depth, and Depth-in-Use.

QT40 covers what’s wanted. Needed.
The minimum.

The whole is a business expense deduction.

A wife of whom you’re tired? Sure, get her a C29 that is basically useless in today’s environment. And a 3’ Firestick antenna. Too little learned, too late.

Those who’d tell you those radios are fine haven’t advice worth hearing. Never been anywhere and never seen anything.

"Radioddity QT40 10 Meter SSB Ham Radio" Anybody make one for 11 meters?

If you type in YouTube how to convert Radioddity QT-40 to 11 meter mod .... it will show you ... It comes set to 10 meter.... You open the cover and take a little jumper that slides up and down on little pins.... There are three pins there ..You take it offf the first two pins and slide it into the last two pins ... They have a big white wire looped up on the board just begging to be cut... Cut the wire and it's now 11 meter.... They do this so it can be sold in America.... When they go overseas with different rules they just move the jumper and cut the wire..... This way Radioddity can have one radio and sell it here in the USA or ship it overseas .... One radio does both the 10 and 11 meter bands..... Watch a video on it... There must be 100 how to vids on it..... Get it tonight before Amazon Prime day is over..... $10 bucks is $10 bucks
I promise you, you will be VERY happy with that radio .... I would like to know the antenna???
Really no point in putting a great radio if you don't have a great antenna and have a good ground plane for it

the few new people that you can help, make it all worth it

3 years ago, I had a brand spanking new Cobra 148 GTL still in the box from 1989 just waiting for me to get time and put up my base antenna...... I put the whole base system up... the Cobra worked ok... but I listened to all the people RAVE about the Anytone 5555 N II and how fantastic the NRC was.... so I bought one.... it made my Cobra look like a Cracker Jacks toy... sold the Cobra and have been so incredibly grateful to the people here that talked me into the Anytone 5555 N II .... it was a total game changer and has given me hundreds of hours of great pleasure.

so you have to at least try to help the new people... they sadly just don't know, some will listen and we can help some...

the others will buy junk and never hear or talk more than a couple miles away... they will go around screaming CB is dead... CB is a waste of money... no one is on CB....

it is extremely frustrating
but if they did buy a good one, they would then be trying to use it with a 2 foot fire stick

I see people buy the most highly rated junk radio on Amazon .... they go around saying that CB doesn't work..
I go and turn on my 5555 N II and talk to 150 people from all over the world ...talking East coast to West Coast... Europe to South America in just a couple hours.... and I just feel sorry some people just won't open their eyes.

this is my first long range contact... I think I had my 5555 N II for a week at this point ....and I was totally shocked what this radio could do compared to the month I played with my Cobra.... I kept trying to get this guy just not fully believing the new radios can do this so easily.

Very nice and very illegal. Unless you have a Ham license.

The conversion to enable 11M is simple.

We’ve linked videos here and they’re easily found online. There’s no reason to pay for this.

Speeding is illegal. Has actual consequences affecting others. Has there been a single day in which you drove and NOT ONCE came within 3-MPH of the speed limit?

The real work with a big truck — reversed from an automobile — is coax and power routing. Then aftermarket antenna & mount.

A Radio Guy with a truck driver girlfriend?
You’d think she’d have one of the best thought-out rigs on the road.

Don’t balk at irrelevant details, speedie.

Why are you still whining in your sad ham smugness? You asked a question, we answered, and our answer wasn't good enough for you. Go buy whatever compliant CB you choose as you revel in your sanctimony.

Meanwhile, out on the road, your wife will have a radio that'll barely get out of the truck stop while 27.025 is filled with laughing hams...

I guess I just worked too hard for my Ham license, N4AXT, to just throw it all away.
We gave you an option for a great radio.
If you don't like what many here use.and feel is a top CB radio
Then get whatever is on sale and will make you happy.
try the Uniden 505 XL.... For all your hard research, You deserve it... check the Amazon reviews 10,000 five star reviews... it must be really good right.
Best of luck I'm done

How? The radio isn’t for you. It’s for your lady friend. Correct?

You do also realize that roughly 50% of the people on 11 meter are hams running high powered HF rigs don’t you? Most are more than happy to boast about it and tell you exactly what rig they are using and how many watts they are pushing. The FCC doesn’t care, and they haven’t cared since they dropped the licensing requirement for CB roughly 50 years ago.

A 4 watt - 150 watt “CB” will easily hide under the radar. Nobody will kick your door in for using a 40 watt 10 meter radio on 11 meter. Real 10 meter radios don’t come with echo and roger beeps. The ones that do are CB’s in disguise. It’s been that way for decades.

Some of us still have amateur tickets. I let mine expire 25 years ago because ham radio was rapidly becoming the "learn the code" bunch, and the hand-wringing Nellie Olesons like you.

Why in the hell is God's gift to amateur radio asking questions of the unlawful and unwashed CB heathens who you obviously feel are beneath you?

Seriously, dude, name-dropping your own callsign like we should be impressed and deferential? 🤣

The expense to which I went a dozen years ago to have a big truck radio system?

Is today matched by a system at 1/2 the price.

That old system saved me from peril many times, and kept me from killing several because I was the only one who heard a man going the other way SCREAMING to be heard of what was ahead of us over the crest.

I used my tractor-trailer to block both Interstate lanes. Fully stopped. Icy.

I was THE ONLY ONE who heard that warning.

This is the model of what’s wanted. Many, many other times when I was the only one who heard vital info I became used to being that relay point for those around me. That vital info was directly related not only to hazard, but to the best job performance possible. Choices.

It improved my income every month.

Best Radio = Right Choice. The rest of the big truck radio system is where you’ll want to focus.

I’ve done 6-7 big trucks. Most brands. You’ll be able to come up with a supply list to DIY an excellent antenna system and run the thing on clean power. Will take you about a day. This will be top 5%.

Do It Once & Do It Right.

I’ve not ever had an employer come to me to complain about my “truck modifications”. Instead — as word got around — I’d show other drivers how I did it. Men I hadn’t met but whom shop employees or other drivers who’d heard my rig had recommended me.

Hearing is Believing.

Your girlfriend would have some powerful mojo the other drivers knowing someone cared about her like this. Do not discount indirect effects.

On that Radio is a Somebody, not an NPC.

Truck driver humor she’ll develop to a higher level.

Q: “Hey, honey, how do I get a great radio like that? Can you help me?”

A: “You’ll need to get the right boyfriend”.

I hope you're not still talking on the air Hugh, better check your license expiration date. Good luck in your decision.
