Replacement antenna question...

Hello all.

I have a Uniden BCD396T portable scanner and I use the OEM SMA Type antenna.

A lot of the stuff I receive aren't the clearest, and I wonder if I should replace the OEM antenna with a better one.

Could someone recommend a good SMA Type replacement antenna? Thank you much.

As long as length isn't an issue, it's tough to find a better all around antenna then the Diamond 77CA. It's about 15 inches long but beats almost every other portable antenna for anything but 800 Mhz. If most of your listening is 800 trunked systems, the 800 Mhz antenna from Radio Shack is a good performer and excellent value. It works well on UHF, OK on VHF, and not at all on low band, so it just depends on what band is the most important to you.

I traded in my 396T and now have a 396XT, which is a much better radio, especially on digital! I also purchased a Watson 881 super gainer antenna from Scanner Master. You can go to their web site and under antennas/portable antennas they show the Watson super gainer 881, which is 16" long and the 801 regular gainer, which is 8" long. They show it is available in both the BNC and SMA models. As I said, I purchased the 881 (BNC), as I wanted to pick up low-band signals. Thus far, this antenna has done a very good job. In fact, I also purchased an adaptor so the BNC would fit the NMO mount on my car.
