RES running under emulation in Linux?

Good morning, everyone.

I currently have RES version 5.8.14 installed on a desktop Windows PC at home I use for programming a BK KNG2 P150. However, when operating mobile or in the field, I tend to instead use my Linux laptop (System 76 Lemur Pro), since it does 99% of what I need it to do. The main things I still find myself retreating to Windows for are:
* VARA FM and HF
* Winlink Express
* Radio programming software such as RES, RT Systems, and Icom's software for the F70/F80 series.

I have two basic questions for the group:

1) Has anyone gotten RES working using a Windows emulation layer (the various flavors of WINE such as Crossover, WineTricks, etc). If so, any suggestions to make getting it running easy? I have NOT yet tried installing under WINE.

2) Has anyone run RES under a Windows 7 or 10 virtual machine on another platform, such as VMWare Player or VirtualBox sitting atop an OS X or Linux host? Again, same question as above.

I'm not a BK/Relm user, but I'll chime in. I often use Kenwood and EFJ software in a VMWare virtual machine inside Ubuntu. It works perfectly with FTDI USB-serial cables. Wine doesn't support USB drivers at this time, so a full VM is required. If your BK radios use similar cables, there is a good chance they will work properly.

That's a very useful response; thank you! I figured the VM might be the better way to go with serial pass-through, but I was hopeful. I did not realize the USB driver issue with WINE.
