To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

Well I've got a 2000 Ford Crown Victoria Police Interceptor that has an NMO mount on the roof and the cable that runs from the mount ends with a male RG58 connector. I thought that this setup would be perfect for my Yaesu FT7800 as long as I purchased an RG58 to PL259 adapter. The guy at Radio Shack was clueless about what I was telling him and I ended up buying a PL259 adapter and this other adapter that fits inside, part number UG-176. When I got home and connected the 2 pieces together, I don't see a way that I could connect my male RG58 plug to this adapter. A Google search suggested a PL259 adapter and this other part number UG-175. Has anyone ever successfully connected an RG58 male cable to a PL259 adapter? If so, what hardware did you use? Thanks

I think you are a little confused with the terminology. RG-58 is a cable - not a connector. The UG designators are for reducer adapters so PL-259 connectors can be used on various size cables - see below:

Reducer Cable Type
UG-174/U RG-174,316
UG-175/U RG-58,55,141,142
UG-176/U RG-59,8x,62,71,LMR-240

The reducer screws into the back end of the PL-259 connector to reduce the cable opening on the back end of the PL-259 connector to accomodate different size cables per the chart above.

Is this the info you were looking for?

If you are not equipped or good at soldering then your going to have a tough time with this unless your equipped with the proper crimp connectors and tools.

Many newer two way radios are using mini UHF connectors, especially Motorola radios.

As fineshot1 points out there is no such thing as a "RG58" connector.

The best way to do this is to cut off the connector and put on the PL 259, but you do have to be reasonably good with soldering to do that. An adapter is OK, although there will be some loss.

Thanks for the info fineshot1 and garys. I guess I was confused with the terminology, thanks for clearing it up. So, assuming I buy a UG-175 adapter, what sort of crimping tools would you recommend? I have a soldering iron. Would you mind giving me a brief step-by-step on how to attach the PL259 to this RG 58 cable? There is currently a plug on the end of the cable that probably needs to be cut off to begin the process. Thanks again

garys, upon investigating I have found that the connector at the end appears to be a mini-UHF male so I might try to find an adapter for that.

Mini-UHF connectors require a crimp tool and connector.

Go to http://rfsearch.rfindustries.com/fshome.asp

search for "crimp tool" under description and all the RFA-4005 crimp tool sets will pop up.

This will give you an idea of what you need (crimp tool & die sets).

After you get an idea of what you need you can actually make the purchase on ebay or some other site of your choice and can also be another brand if you like.

PS - What connector is on the end of the RG-58 cable now? Did you confirm that
there is not a Mini-UHF conn on there now??

EDIT: Sorry - I did not realize there was no descriptions for the dies - see below:

RFA-4005-01, Crimp Die Set for RG-58/U, RG-59/U,RG-142/U,RG-8/X, LMR-195, LMR-200, LMR-240 & Proflex Coaxial Cables;

RFA-4005-02, Crimp Die Set for RG-8/U, RG-213/U, LMR-400 & Belden 9

fineshot1, it appears that there IS a mini UHF connector on the end right now, which is why I was thinking it might be easier to get an adapter for a male mini UHF to PL259...

Yes - they make them & I have some. You can find them online on ebay or various web sites. If you do a google search you can find lots of them.
