Nice video, very cool. Can't wait till they're available.

I'm working on it. My only hold up might be getting the v1.1 boards made before Christmas. I THINK I missed the board house deadline for shutdown. They are going to pick back up right after Christmas, so there might be a wait until then.

It never fails, I end up designing a product that is in demand, right before Christmas and I have this same problem. I will keep the group updated.

OK Guys, I need to take a potential buyer head count:

A. If you could purchase this kit right now, in the current state for $35, would you and how many?

B. If you could purchase this kit with some upgrades like a smaller board for the head end and a "jump" power port (screw terminal block) on the main board for $40, would you and how many?

I need to get an idea of if I am obsessing over pointless add-ons or if it's somthing that would pay off to add on. I am sitting on a bunch of boards and if the majority would rather just have the current version, I will build up kits and sell of the boards I have on-hand, if not, I will have to get new boards with the add-ons.

Thanks!

I would be in for one of the upgraded/$40 boards. Could you possibly show a picture or drawing of what the small board will be? Would the power port be the only upgrade?

Thanks!

The major changes would be the head-end board would be about 1/3 smaller, so it tucks behind the head nicer and the main board would have the addition of a two terminal block that the scanner's power cable could be connected to. This would eliminate the need for any kind of Y-adapter for powering both the scanner and the head.

Of course, this jump port would only be usable for the mobile versions. Since the 396D and 396XT both require 6VDC, you can't use this port for powering it directly. That would require a 6VDC regulator on board and I am not that interested in adding that on, at this time. Regardless, there is still no way to easy control the scanner's power from the head, so it would only be a passive feature.

I'm in

I'd purchase on of the upgraded boards @ $40. I'd be willing to pay another $10 if each board were mounted in a plastic box.

Again, thank you for the work you've done on this Uniden shortcoming, and the fact that you have shared this with us. You may be able to work a deal with ScannerMaster and other resellers to sell these as an option to the RH-96.

The board layout is attached. You will see that one is much smaller than the other, meant to go with the head end. The first gen boards were equal in size. You can see the difference in size now. You can also see that the larger board has the two terminal block, in addition to the coaxial power jack. I envision a single power "feed" to the coaxial jack, feeding the head with power and then "jumping" power from the terminal block to the scanner.

In theory, you could wire a cigarette lighter jack to the jump port and then plug in a 6vdc power cord or even wire a separate 6vdc power block to the jump terminal. Or power the portable scanner separately as you suggest.

Either way, I'll take one of the revised boards if available or one of the original boards if you decide not to make the revised one.

Thanks.

It looks like the overwelming majority are interested in the upgraded version, so I am going to get that going. I am hoping to have them available right after the first of the year. Its too late in the year to get it all together before Christmas. I am also checking into some cables and will most likely not have those in-hand until after the first the year anyways, so that gives me a little bit of time.

Thanks for all of the great input!

I kinda favor the pigtail idea for the head end. The smaller the better there for sure. No pre-assembly required IMO for that one. Make it a old school through hole board and throw all the parts in a bag to be assembled by the customer. Heck even a bare board of that type would suit me fine.

You might even be able to squeeze a board like this into an otherwise wasted piece of board stock. It would only have to be around 1 X 2 inches or thereabouts.

Regardless, this a nice little project and sign me up for a set.
