I programmed (ARC96) the Richardson P25 system into my 2096 a few days ago and I'm barely getting any traffic. I'm near one of the sites so I know it isn't reception. Has anyone had any luck getting better reception by programming the Richardson P25 Channel ID Table into their scanner? I'd like to try but I'm worried I will mess something up.

Richardson is a simulcast system and it looks like all law enforcement channels there are fully encrypted. The Uniden Bearcat SDS100 is better at simulcast, but if law enforcement is encrypted then you can't hear them at all, you'll only be able to hear Fire and any other channels.

In addition to being simulcast, the Richardson system is using much lower transmit power than on other DFW area sites.

On the current license, ERP is in the 30 to 35 watts range (varies by individual subsite). Compare that to the neighboring PAWM simulcast, which shows an ERP of almost 200. I'm in Dallas, about 15 miles from that system, and can receive it very rarely

Does that scanner even do P25 phase 2?
And yes it can be a reception issue as Richardson is Simulcast and that scanner is not designed for simulcast reception.

My office (where I'm trying to listen) is in Richardson a nearly 1.5 miles from the West and South towers. I'm just trying to listen to fire so I'm not worried about the PD. I know that the 2096 does Phase 1 and isn't Richardson P25 system a Phase 1? Are yall only inputting the control frequencies?

Being between two or more towers about the same distance apart is likely the issue. That's a symptom of simulcast systems not working on scanners that were not designed for simulcast.

Sorry if this is a dumb question but doesn't a Phase 1 capable scanner means it's also simulcast capable? My 2096 worked just fine on the GATRRS system in Austin when it used to be Phase 1.

No. Unfortunately, many of us were sold scanners by Uniden and Whistler with no indication that they would not work well with simulcast systems. Yeah, I'm still a little bitter about that. :) Really, your only options are the Uniden SDS 100, SDS 200, and Unication G4 or G5. Otherwise, you can try to use yagi antennas and holding your mouth just right, and you might be able to get some reception. However, that doesn't work when you're moving around. Simulcast issues have and continue to be discussed elsewhere on this site and elsewhere. I would try moving the scanner around within your home/business and see if there's a sweet spot, before investing a lot of time and money. You might also take it somewhere else and try it, just to make sure it is working in some locations.
